Yes, I heard about it.
According to the Japanese Magnitude scale, it was a 6.9. I just check the news, and as of 11:30pm JST 1 woman dead, and 162 injured. It happened in Ishikawa prefecture. 1345 people have been evacuated to 32 different evac sites. In Ishikawa Pref. 44 homes were completely destroyed, 69 were partially damaged. After shocks were felt at 6pm, and 9pm and measured at 4 and 3 respectively.

By the looks of it, there wasn't that much damage if compared to the Kobe quake 10+ years ago. Which is a good thing.

Pray for the people there.

Yes, it was strong, but only in a very small area (as far as earthquakes go, that is) in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures.
If your friends are outside these areas, they should be okay.
Here in Tokyo we didn't feel a thing.

As of now, some nine hours after the event, 1 death has been reported, as well as 170 injuries.

Yea. M 6.9 -7.0. It's huge. It's devastating. The town was horribly damaged.
But I always wonder why the earthquake in Japan causes very few death.

I believe it was a 6. something earthquake. One was killed many badly injured. If your friends are in the urban areas I don't think they would be badly injured. The worst seemed to happen in the rural areas with the old houses.
