I plan to go over to Japan and teach English when I finish college. I've read about the people, studied and practiced the language, absorbed as much of the culture as I could, but I am a little worried over the sort of things I've been reading about treatment of foreigners. I am Black, and I've heard from people about how some people will expect you to be over there, which makes me worry that I will get stuck in the "black gangsta gaijin monster" stereotype... (I heard that people won't even answer the door if they see a black man behind it!)

My question is, is it hard to find people that will see me as another human being, and not what they see from American television and movies in Japan? I plan to live in the urban areas by the way....

Is there a troll giving "Looking for the truth..." thumbs down on all of his answers? I've noticed that no matter what he says, lately, he's been getting a lot of thumbs down. Sometimes answers may warrant it, but I think this is foul play...

I am 17 years old and very interested in talking to someone who has taught english in japan before, that has not been part of the JET or NOVA programs. I have heard a lot of mixed messages, that it's extremely hard to get an apartment and find a job, then I've heard that work is plentiful and it's an amazing experience.

I want to talk to someone about how I should go about getting a job independently.

Please leave email or AIM screen name, thank you.

I will be staying in Kyoto for 2 nights and I am deciding that 1 night I will spend it at either Pontocho or Gion, while the other at Osaka’s Namba area.

Can anyone advice whether Pontocho or Gion I should choose? Lastly, is it accessible and convenient to travel from Kyoto to Namba?

I have recently been called on an LDS mission to Tokyo Japan and would like to find a nice poster map of Japan or Tokyo particularly. Does anyone know where I can go to buy one, online or in person somewhere?

I am going to be living with a host family in Japan I don't know where yet but probably outside of Tokyo. I will be submerged in culture and I will be the only American foreign exchange student in the whole entire school. I just don't want to have big farewells and I don't want to have to attend plays or anything out of the ordinary, hopefully you will see where I am going with this.

I've thought about visiting or teaching English in Japan like my cousin did. I was wondering for all you others who have visited Japan or live in it- What was it like, was it hard at first? And if someone plans on teaching English in Japan, should you know the Japanese language? Any funny experiences happen since you were a foreigner?

I need cheap student travel to Fukuoka, Japan in September for a year's study there. Since Fulkuoka is not a mainstream tourist airport compared to others and is therefore expensive, I have heard of various options, like travel to Australia or Hong Kong or Tokyo on a cheap flight and then on to Fukuoka. What do you think?

Also, is there a good time of day, or week or year to travel when it is cheaper than at others or a cheaper airline or tour operator?

And what about other options, like standby or collecting Airmiles or sending myself by airmail...?

I wrote earlier and said that "I am currently staying in Tokyo and I am the only son. My father (a Filipino) died several years ago and I am now living with my Japanese mom. I married recently to a Filipina here in Tokyo last year. Since I am the only son, I can't leave my mom. My problem is that my mom insisted that it is Japanese culture that wives should stay at home and do the household. My wife insisted she wanted to work. I said that I am willing to give her allowance instead. Just to prevent trouble with my mom. Do you think that my mom is right? Is it really Japanese tradition that women are prefered to be at home?"

One of the poster, Ernesto, suggested I talk to my wife and ask her the reason why she wanted to work. She said that she need the money to send regularly every month back home to the Philippines for her parents and to send her sisters to college.

I am now more confused. What would you advise?
