Mount Takao is a mountain in the city of Hachioji, Tokyo. Standing 599 m tall, it is a popular hiking spot. A Buddhist temple, Takaosan Yakuoin Yukiji, is located on the mountain. Mount Takao is closely associated with tengu, minor kami from Japanese folklore. There is a local rumor, especially amongst young adults, where couples who climb Mount Takao will separate shortly thereafter.
You can go there either by Takaosan cable car or Chuo Main Line.
Hope these help you. Enjoy your vacation. ^^

hmmn, what do you like doing? if you like hiking and that sorta stuff, sure its ok. but other than that there is not much there, theres a temple and ... about 4 public phone booths up the top, but its kinda quiet, but maybe a good break from the tokyo rush. i went there a few years ago when there was a meteor shower, it was the closest high and dark place at the time i could get to, for get what line its on, but its about 2 hours all up by slow trains. have fun :)

After going to the top to see the view, take the time to have a meal at Ukai Toriyama (must have a reservation). It is gorgeous - the waitresses are in beautiful kimono and the setting is like the final scene in "Memoirs of a Geisha" - little bridges over streams and cherry trees...amazing. I went there last year. I enjoyed it. The main focus of the mountain is the Tengu goblin and there are a number of statues and pictures of Tengu.

You can take the cable car or hike up to the top. On a clear day you can see Mt. Fuji in the distance.
