The main statistic I always hear is that the population of Japan is roughly half the population of the USA. Then add to that the fact that Japan is 1/25 the size of the USA. Than add to that the fact that only 25% of Japan is inhabitable, being that Japan is very mountainous and basically one huge volcanic rock.

You kind of get the picture of what the living situation in Japan is like. Try stuffing half the population of the US in southern California and you have Japan.
