I live in Fukushima, Japan. My mum (in her early 50s, fairly open minded but not up for a 2-day drinking session!) is coming to visit and we decided to fly south to Kyoto for a couple of days when she does.

Can anyone recommend places to visit in Kyoto that my mum and I might enjoy?

Plus, any hotel recommendations? We'll stay for 2 nights, don't want to spend excessive amounts of money (not not exactly budget either) but want somewhere comfortable and in a good location.

Day One:
Kinkakuji, Ryoanji, Fushimi Inari

Day Two:
Kiyomizu-dera, walk on small streets to Kodaiji, go to Gion at dusk to spot Maiko.

Whatever you decide, dont overload the days as it is easy to overdo it with temples & shrines, and there is so much to enjoy by just walking in Kyoto. Also, go to Pontocho for dinner one night.

Last time I stayed at the Hyatt and it was significantly cheaper than the Hyatt in Tokyo.
