My wife and I (we're in early forties) have been planning to go for a month-long Japan tour next year. My objectives are to visit as many beautiful places and cities as possible, probably starting out from Osaka and ending in Hokkaido.
Should I get a JR Pass, commute by bus or rent a car?
Is there some way that we can arrange for a stayover or homestay for a couple of days?
Places to visits or events that I should take note of?

Any suggestions on how to do it in the most economical way?
BTW, I can speak and write Japanese.

If you want to travel across Japan and have enough time, I recommend you to take Seishun 18 Kippu (Youth 18 Ticket).

Seishun 18 Kippu is a ticket with which you can take ALL JR local trains in the entire Japan without distance limit for one day just for 2,000 Yen (17 USD). It is only local trains and not express or limited express trains. So it takes time to travel with Seishun 18 Kippu. But you can enjoy it.

Please keep in mind that Seishun 18 Kippu is seasonal ticket and its use is limited to certain period of time in the year. It can be used in the entire March or August, and some other time.

Seishun 18 Kippu can be bought at ticket counter of JR stations.

I am Vietnamese, I like to visit Japan . I visited Japan in February 2007 . I am alone . It is safely for me . I went to Japan with Benthanh Tourist Company . I visit Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto . I think you should go with a tour trip. It is cheap and safe for you . You are rent a car . it is very expensive . Although you speak and write Japanese but In Japan everything is very expensive .

I agree with thecheap on the seishun 18 kippu. I've traveled on them before and they are a great bargin. If you have a month, then the local trains are fine. Just buy a bento and some beverages and enjoy the ride. I would reccomend going up from Kansai the "back" way, through Kanazawa and Tateyama and then on to Matusmoto and Nagano.

That sounds like a great plan. I would definitely recommend getting the rail pass. That is the funnest way to travel around Japan, and since the trains travel through the cities as well as the country side, you get a taste of both worlds.

As for doing a home stay. I would recommend you contact the international exchange department of the city in which you wish to do your home stay. They have resources and information that can connect you with the people you will need to contact.

If you come around August, it will be really hot, but if you are going to be going up North, that would be perfect. Summer time in Japan is very active with a lot of the best festival going on at that time. You would really be able to get a taste for Japan's culture a that time. But like I said, IT'S HOT!!!

Enjoy your trip!
