I am going on a trip to Africa and I am in desprate need of money to get there. I was told it was too late to ask for grants. I was also advised to fundraise but with my busy schedule I don't have time. I am a high school junior and this is the most important year/semester therfore I can't afford to get a job. My mom is a single mother and I feel bad asking her (being that this is my 2nd time going out of the country and she's only been to Canada; as far as out of country) I can't wait until next year because the trip is in May and next year I will be going off to college...What shall I do???? I need help fast??? What can I do or where can I go to raise money

And before anyone responds with the usual 'yes, for 8% of the population', let's look at the facts:
Firstly, apartheid was inexcusable and had to go. It would eventually have disintegrated on its own. This question is about irony.
Under the previous government, South Africa had a working infrastructure, first world amenities and relativey crime free streets.
Since the thugs of the ANC took over, aided by the UN and America sticking their noses into a situation where they had nothing to lose, the country has followed the road to ruin of every single African country. Without exception.
Rape, murder and robbery are the order of the day, as well as theft of land, which will eventually lead to the starvation of the country.
The EXACT SAME racial classifications have been put back in place, this time benefiting blacks, leaving out all other minorities - Coloured, Indian - just as they were left out under apartheid.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Why does it seem that there is such a high occurrence of infidelity among South Africans, both male and female? I am an American and I just returned to the U.S. after living in Cape Town for two years. I have lived and worked in many countries around the world, including several other African countries, and nowhere else have I encountered such an epidemic of cheating spouses and significant others. Intuitively, one would think that because of the high rate of HIV, people would be afraid to engage in casual sex. So I ask, is this problem a result of cultural, societal or historical factors and what can be done to resolve it?

Just finished watching Blood diamond. I really enjoyed the part where Leo Di Caprio says to his South African friend:"Hey, score us a loose (cigerette) there."
And hearing Arnold Vosloo talk in Afrikaans actually made me miss home, despite the violence in the movie.
But why on earth did they have Marius Weyers playing Van der Kaap if he only says two words in the whole movie. Do you think that they actually had him saying more and then edited it out?

Before you guys get angry and attack me, please listen to what I have to say! A co-worker recently said that South Africans MUST be ignorant or plain stupid to not rise above the problems the country is facing. In a way I agreed with this. But then I thought about the insult a bit more and remembered the lack of knowledge and uninformed comments from other nations and that got me thinking... I've worked with many foreigners, from Japanese to Americans and some are still good friends. But some (and I won't mention the nationalities) complain with every breath they take, others have nothing positive to say about anything whatsoever, some can't keep a conversation when it doesn't include some kind of technological agenda and some can't even open their mouths. I'm talking about only four different nationalities here. Last month in South Africa, I talked politics with the bum on the street! Is it okay for foreigners to call us ignorant when they themselves can't keep a decent conversation?

This was the vision of Nelson Mandela in 1984, when he wrote "The Future of South Africa". Do you think South Africans have been accepted by the world as being responsible? Please be fair in your answer. Crime and AIDS have put us back hundreds of years, but the world still showed their respect for the country when they awarded the Football / Soccer World Cup to South Africa. Also, on a different note, our efforts to strengthen and consolidate democracy are recognized worldwide.

I'll start you off with:
1. More than 50% of paragliding records have been set in South Africa.
2. The Lost City Resort Hotel at Sun City is the largest theme resort hotel in the world.
3. The only street in the world to house two Nobel Peace winners is in Soweto. Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu both have houses in Vilakazi Street, Orlando West.
4. South Africa has the longest wine route in the world.
5. South Africa had the 5th highest number of physicians in the world per 100 000 people.

Can you add some fun facts to the more serious list I provided?

I think it happened in 1985 and has been dubbed the 'Trojan Horse Incident.'

A truck was driving through one of the townships (possibly Crossroads at Gugulethu). A group of youths gathered and began stoning the vehicle. It was a police decoy, and from out of the back, numerous police officers sprang and opened fire on them.

We are flying (my wife and I) to Cape Town in 10 days, and have two weeks there. We'd love to crash for the first week - somewhere nice, good pool, peaceful, near the beach - and then be more active for the second week.
Anyone have any good recommendations on places to stay/things to do?
