Just finished watching Blood diamond. I really enjoyed the part where Leo Di Caprio says to his South African friend:"Hey, score us a loose (cigerette) there."
And hearing Arnold Vosloo talk in Afrikaans actually made me miss home, despite the violence in the movie.
But why on earth did they have Marius Weyers playing Van der Kaap if he only says two words in the whole movie. Do you think that they actually had him saying more and then edited it out?

Yes, Leo did a great job. Not perfect, but for an American admirable. As an ex-overland guide I spent quite a lot of time in Zim, and his accent is actually very close to the Zimbabwean accent (he's supposed to be an ex-Rhodesian in the film). Arnold Vosloo is just a natural. Gotta like the guy! For sure, its a shame that oom Marius got such a small role. He's certainly one of our best actors ever. It was like hiding a Rolls in a garage.
The film timeslot is 1999 in Sierra Leone. I was in the army in 92 and know that after the end of military service and the closing down of many units, a lot of highly trained guys (some of whom I knew) joined Executive Outcomes, the mother company which recruited many of these ex-soldiers as highly paid mercenaries. The little that I know of these guys are that they were/are a rather rough, though highly trained and professional, bunch, as accurately portrayed by the movie.
The director took the challenge of working with various niches and stories within stories to create a melting pot that seem real. In lesser hands it could easily have become one big confusion.
One of the little stories within stories that touched my heart as a South African and which probably went unnoticed by most international audiences, was the portrayal of us as white South Africans also being African. Also having the soil of our home in our blood. Somebody out there gave recognition to that...thank you, whoever you are.

I watched blood diamond a few days ago and was very impressed! There a few movies that leave such a huge impression on me & make me want 2 make a difference in this world straight after walking out the cinema!
I feel it definatly deserves an oscar!
I also think that Leonardo Dicaprio deserves an Oscar for his performance!
Can you even begin to imagine how hard it must be for a pure blood american to try to perfect a south african accent?! of course we as south africans think it would be easy as its our natural way of speaking but listening to other accents... i think our S.A. one is completely unique!
Of course he didnt get it perfect! When i took a moment to stop focusing on the brutality portrayed in the film, i found it quite amusing to hear him speaking "south african"!
Among the words i caught him saying were "doos", "bru" and of course "kaffer". i think these words are all unique to S.A. (of course we cant be proud of all of them) but i did feel proud sittin in the theatre hearing uniquely South African words in an international movie!
There were even quite a few afrikaans conversations, especially between the army generals!
I have to smile when i imagine foreign audiences watching this overseas, not completely understanding it, and the few south africans amoung them who can taste a bit of home!

Haven't seen it yet... but i'm dying to! Apparently he does the accent quite well?!? BUT I don't see why they didn't use a local actor though... a lot of people have said it wouldn'tve been so big if Leo wasn't in it and we'd used a local... I guess so, but it would've been cool... Leo is a good actor though!!

As someone who had lived in South Africa for a while I would say that it reminded me of a forigners afrrikan's accent. you know someone who had lived there for a while but is not orginally from there.

The slang was good. he even used "is it?" in way i've only heard in south africa.
