Last year I took beginner ice skating lessons. When I first went out on the ice I couldn't even stand on the skates by the time I finished my lessons (16 lessons) I could slowly stroke around the rink. Close and hanging on to the boards. How can I get away from the boards and improve my balance? Is there anything or exercises that I can do to improve these areas. By the way I was 44 when I took my first lesson. Thanks.

Does anyone know where I can find a good skating dress pattern with no sleeves, preferably a halter top?
I've looked in fabric stores like Joanns and stuff but they only have wierd patterns with long sleeves.
I just want to make a practice dress, because I have a hard time finding ones that aren't way expensive that fit me because I'm really skinny but I have kind of a long torso and I know how to sew.

I have been skating every day for two weeks and I am still getting bruises and blisters on my toes and ankles. The boots were professionally fit, so I know that they are they right size. I am just having trouble breaking them in.

I'm learning to ice skate, and I get muscle cramps in the arches of my feet after just a few minutes. I've switched from figure skates to hockey skates, put in arch support inserts and gel insoles, tightened the laces and loosened the laces. Nothing has helped. Any suggestions?

I have never really competed before, although I have been figure skating for 10 years and have been in annual shows almost every year. I just started looking into competing but am annoyed that the music must be non vocal. It puzzles me as to why this is, so I just wanted to know what others think of it.

Just wondering, because I am pretty flexible, but whenever I try to do a beillman I can pull my skate up and grab it with the other hand, and I can almost pull it up over my head, but whenever I try to pull it up any higher my back starts to hurt really badly. I stretch a lot, but is there any specific stretches that I could do to make it so I could pull it up higher without my back hurting?

By the way, http://www.denisebiellmann.com/ga/figur04.jpg this is a biellman

What are the basic skills and how long does it take to learn them regularly? I'm 12 almost 13 and want to do figure skating. I haven't have any exp. yet and at my ice rink there are private and group lessons. I really want to do private, but it is $20 every 15 minutes! Thats expensive for me. Group lessons are cheaper, but will I be stuck with the little kids like 5 and 6? Please answer this question. Thanks! =)

My mother and I were just having an argument because she says that ice skating is not a feminine sport and it's for everyone, but my opinion differed. I said that it's a feminine sport and that any guy who ice skates is a girly man. lol...

What do you think?

And what level do you compete at, if you compete?

Just wondering what level everyone is in USFSA (basic skills/learn to skate or pre-preliminary, preliminary, prejuvenile, juvenile, imtermediate, novice, junior, senior)in Singles(moves and freeskate), Pairs, or Ice Dance or ISI or something else like if you
live in a different country and skate.

I'm in USFSA level juvenile moves and juvenile freeskate so I compete in Open Juvenile

I don't hear much about American figure skaters recently.
What happened to them (women skaters in particular)?

In the past, you had such great skaters as Nancy Kerrigan, Kristy Yamaguchi, Tara Lipinski, Nicole Bobek, Michelle Kwan, Sasha Cohen, Sarah Hughes...

Why American women figure skaters (except for Kimmie Meissner) are not in the spot light in international competitions?

I'm a 16 year old girl and I'm a figure skater. I used to be able to do all my jumps up to my double lutz really well. However, in the past year, I've become scared to do my double flip and lutz. I want to do them, and my singles are great. I'm just scared of falling on the doubles. Any suggestions on how I can overcome my fear and land these jumps again?

I havent competed in a really long time (I stopped when I got my axel at age 8-ish) and am competing in a month or so. Does someone remember what it's like? When you get there, what do you do? feeling? does anybody applaud at the end of your program? or eerie silence and then forced clapping? I cant remember since it was so long ago. HELP ME!
