My mother and I were just having an argument because she says that ice skating is not a feminine sport and it's for everyone, but my opinion differed. I said that it's a feminine sport and that any guy who ice skates is a girly man. lol...

What do you think?

Well artistry is graceful and pretty instead of other sports where you just do it and you don't care what you look like, but in figure skating you HAVE to look good, if you don't you will never win because if it doesn't look good then it's wrong, and you failed, that's kind of an intense thing to say but that's what my coach tells me, if it doesn't look good you will never win, and you have failed. To skate you have to be very strong and have a lot of endurance, when someone does a triple jump and they weigh lets say 120 pounds, when you land it that's 360 pounds on your ankles, and double would be 240 pounds, and if you can do a quad bu mostly men that do it, and men weigh more then 120 but a quad would be 480 pounds on one ankle, you have to be strong, my partner also plays football and hockey, and his friends, sometimes ask him why he skates, and he just says, "hmm what's more gay, a bunch of guys jumping on top of each other, or me putting my hands all over a girl since I was 8" I also play lacrosse and skating has helped me a lot because since I started lax I have been one of the strongest players and I can move quickly because of skating. And skating has caused me t have so any injuries, broken my tailbone 3 times, 5 concussions, broken my ankle, and each of my wrists, displaced a disk in my spin, and broken my knee caps, and dislocated my knee caps, I get hurt a lot because I go all out when I skate

No, not at all! I just went ice skating on Friday night and I was amazed at how many males were on the rink! And they were the best ones there! You may be talking about figure skating which you see more females performing during the Olympics.

I was thinking about this too, that it's more usual for females to ice skate than males, but then I realized that many males play ice hockey. To verify, one of the boys of the rink was super fast and really good and I asked him if he played ice hockey. His response: "Oh yea!"
Peace!

If you've ever seen the Olympics or watched a skating event you'll see that there are many male performers on the ice. It is not only for girls but boys as well. Many men who ice skate aren't even gay or feminine at all really. I'm sorry but your mother is WRONG!

There's a perception in the US that figure skating is a feminine sport, and that men who skate are "girly men". But in many countries outside the US, this perception doesn't exist. In Russia, to use one example, their top male figure skaters are as famous as film stars, considered sexy hot men, and there is absolutely nothing seen as "girly man" about the sport at all.

In the US, it's ladies singles that are shown on tv most often. But outside the US - again, specifically in some areas of Europe - this isn't true. Men's figure skating tends to be more popular.

A lot of hockey players in the US (manly men, all :LOL) figure skate because it improves their hockey playing. And a lot of figure skaters play hockey. I doubt anyone would tell a hockey player that he was a "girly girl".

In my own personal opinion, figure skating is for everyone. Most people, anyway, don't skate at an elite level - they skate for fun. And, as I can tell you from my observations of the Friday night "disco night" skates at my local rinks, the crowds are pretty evenly split between males and females. And it's a HUGE pick up scene. After all, where better to meet cute, hot girls in skimpy costumes than on the ice?

It is for anybody. And by ice skating you are referring to anything done on the ice in ice skates. Maybe you meant figure skating. Still, anyone can do it.

Colleen, that quote is so funny. :]

"hmm what's more gay, a bunch of guys jumping on top of each other, or me putting my hands all over a girl since I was 8"

I don't think it has anything to do about feminine or masculinity - it is about participating in a sport that they enjoy competing in. Men can be just as graceful in ice skating or gymnastics - doesn't mean that they shouldn't do it just because they are men

Ice skating is not a feminine sport. Any sex can do it. Man or woman. My boyfriend and I ice skate at least twice a week to get pumped up.

NO ice skating is for everyone, not just girls. THere are plenty of men that skate that aren't wierd or girly. Especially in pairs skating and ice dance. Do you think guy dancers are wierd then too?

Skating is not just for girls and not all guys that skate are gay. They aren't one of the coaches at our rink is a competetive male figure skater and he is far from gay. It is an artistic sport which takes dedication a practice and if a guy wants to be a figure skater more power to him, it doesn't make him gay, just like if a guy wants to be a cheerleader in highschool it doesn't make him gay, it prolly makes him a perve. Anyways I think that you have some male compensation issues and need to get over them.

I know literally hundreds of men who ice skate for pleasure as well as exercise ,anyone who says its is a girly thing must be a Queer themselves , or needs to get out of their nest and see how the other half lives.I know good hockey players who some of us can blow away on skates and have proved it many times. There are a few older figure skaters (with size able guts) around and when some hockey players rec. skated the older figure skaters did circles around them .
