I have never really competed before, although I have been figure skating for 10 years and have been in annual shows almost every year. I just started looking into competing but am annoyed that the music must be non vocal. It puzzles me as to why this is, so I just wanted to know what others think of it.

They actually don't.

In figure skating, you can compete either in a freeskate level event or in a showcase event.(only up to a certain level though) Freeskate events have no vocals, since this would distract from the performance, while showcase events do have vocals, because the point of them is to entertain.

If you like to skate to vocals, then compete in showcase. They even have a National Showcase Competition that you can compete in if you win at a local showcase competition.

Go to this website to learn more: http://www.usfsa.org/Programs.asp?id=308, on the right, under the resources collumn, click on 2006 National Showcase Promo Video (.wmv) and watch it, it is way cool and gives you an idea of what showcase is about

Non-vocals for competition, vocals/non-vocals for exhibition.

Also, maybe if the song had words, the audience would not able to concentrate on the skaters as much (and the song might be just plain annoying).

Vocals are a touchy issue, sometimes people have vocals but they can't be words, in most shows and stuff you can have vocals, if you really want to have vocals you can always do ice dancing because they can have vocals, I have no idea why they have rules like that but they do.

Well, they can have vocals in the music. I've heard Ally and AJ and That song the says something like "Fill me up, buttercup, don't break my heart". So, well, they can.

Its becuase the words of the song will distract the judges or competitors from their focus.
