You break by bending your knees, and twisting your ankle. Basically you keep your armss open for balance and bend your knees.

You really don't need to know how to do anything before you go skating. Just go slow at first, so you get your legs under you. And you'll be able to shuffle around the rink in short order.

Dress warmly, but in layers that you can strip off as you warm up. Wear gloves, not only to keep your hands warm but also to protect your hands if you fall or hit the boards. Wear thin socks - I know it seems funny, but if you wear one pair of very thin socks, like tights, you'll be able to feel your feet better in the boots.

Enjoy and good luck!

Sadly, the only way to learn what you need to know is to go ice skating and learn by falling.

I find it easier to try different moves myself and just go with the flow. Get your balance first by holding onto the walls and then just experiment. Then you can go onto jumping, going backwards or whatever...

It's cold and very hard when you land. It's good to have strong ankles and a sense of humor. Have fun & God bless. Love you!

Trial and error mostly.

But if you fall, try to fall on your butt and do NOT put your arms behind you because it is really easy to break them like that.
