i do both figure skating and ballet. ballet has several advantages
1. leg muscle strength - helps improve those jumps on ice
2. arm muscle strength - so you have the energy to hold up your arms while skating as well as use them to get greater height on your jumps
3. leg and foot turn out - helps you to get a good leg position on your camel spins, spirals etc. a turned out foot in these positions creates a nice line and looks good. for jumps though, your feet should be slightly turned IN
4. flexibility - just another reason to practice it. high spirals, donut spins, catchfoot spins, I-spins, beillmans all need good flexibility
5.grace - not many figure skaters can skate gracefully, ballet teaches you proper arm positions, and how to hold your body and head so that you dont look like a brick or a stick on ice.
6. discipline - ballet teaches you lots of discipline and focus that you can apply on the ice too
7. ballet is done with music, like ice skating, so this helps you get your music and choreography and helps you 'feel' the music and timing
8. if you perform in ballet, you must learn to show expression and this really helps the artistic part of your skating programme

well, thats all i can think of now.. all the best! if you watch figure skating, you can try to tell the difference btw skaters that are graceful and those whose movements dont flow so well...

Figure skating and ballet require balance, strength in the legs, and ankle strength. They both are using the same muscles, so ballet really helps figure skaters. It also helps with flexability!

ballet is very much the same form. Figure skating is like dancing and ballet is the best dance to learn about structure and how your body works and can bend. It can very much give you the greatest form and balence. When i was a figure skater i did a lot of ballet. Ballet is also a strict balence of mind and expression and while on the ice you have to keep your mind open and express yourself as well. Ballet also helps with your strenth and stamina.

Ballet helps you understand more of the positions you use in skating, it helps strengthen critical muscles that you use most when skating, and it also helps bring out any musical expressiveness you may have. Flexibility is another answer too. =)

Flexibility, balance, body alignment/posture, extension, and strength. Many of the poses in skating are ones that are from ballet - e.g., arabesque, leaps, etc. I'd also recommend taking pilates - it's great for improving your core strength.

You're partly right but in my mind all figure skating is, is a kind of modified ballet on ice.

Because it gives you balance and the coordination you need for figure skating...and the moves too!
