You're never too old to become a figure skater, especially if you've done ballet for that long. I started at 11 and now at 15 I can do all the doubles, and soon will start working on triples. I also compete a lot and do very well at all of them. If you are dedicated, you could do very well and become really good, or you could just do it for fun. You should totally start taking lessons at an ice rink. Figure skating is the best sport ever! It does take a lot of practice and hard work and is quite expensive though.
Keep in mind, you'd never be able to make it to nationals or the olympics, but if you start soon, you do have a chance of placing well at regionals in a few years

A long time! Most of the elite skaters started when they were very young (about 3-5 years old), and their parents poured tons of money into several lessons and practice sessions a week. That doesn't mean it can't be done if someone starts later (Johnny Weir started when he was 12). But it will take a lot of time, money, and desire to succeed. Most serious skaters have a lesson at least 3 times per week (if not more), and practice before and after school for about 3-5 hours a day. Then they also take ballet, do cardio off-ice, stretching, pilates, and weight-lifting. Only a tiny percentage of those skaters will eventually be considered elite. Even if your daughters don't/can't get that far, skating can be very worthwhile. Most who stick with it have the capability to learn double jumps if they work hard. Every test level passed is an achievement. Competitions and shows can be a lot of fun. And the feeling you get when you finally land a jump is the best!

Unless you have never laced on a pair of skates before, 12 is not too old to become a figure skater. It helps that you have a training background in ballet, since much of the style and form of figure skating is inspired by dance. Find yourself a good coach who can provide you with proper training and motivation. Best of luck!

It can be. I mean you can always try but just remember most figure skaters started at the age of 3. They skate every day. You will have to put in some long hours. Good luck

You should try non competitive figure skating and see if you like it, then decide which route to take. You should have your weight and height checked to see if you are too big for Olympic skating. If you are really serious about it you can have this test done for a few hundred dollars.

You are never too old to try something new, but you probably won't be an Olymic athlete. Most skaters have been practicing sice they learned to walk. If you ahve taken ballet, that will help your posture and balance, which will help. Try it, and have fun!

I am 27 and I am learning, you are never to old to learn as long as you have the drive and will to do it. I am working on back wards glides after about 2 months of skating on my own... I also know how to do front ways cross overs...

I would never say don't try. What do you want to do with figure skating? Do you want to just do it locally or do you want it to take over your life?

I think that since you have been doing ballet for so long, you might want to look into ice dancing.
