Hunting - December 2007

What if some guys with guns go into your property and they are headed straight for your house, and you yell at them to leave, and maybe shine a flashlight on them but they still keep coming. What should you do at this point? Can you shoot them? Or do you have to wait till they break your door down before you can shoot? What constitutes right to defend life or property in this case? Do you have to wait for them to be able to get a good shot at you before you fire, cos most people aren't dumb enough to shoot unless they can get a decent shot?

Your property is fenced in and is in a rural but not really in a hunting area.

It is chambered in 41 Rem Mag, and is fitted with a red dot scope. Cant even find a custom outfit that wants to use plain smooth leather instead of the cowboy look. I know this will all be custom of course,(and overkill, I know) but if anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it.

supposed to be German, model 1842. It is marked as follows: On lock plate behind hammer, in scroll, a large "M" with a small "re"( lower case) even with top of the M then a large scrolled "N" with a lower case "le" even with the top of the N below that is lower case scrolled "de" followed by a large scrolled "M" and the rest is worn off. just behind the hammer is a small oval with a 3 pointed crown and a letter G in it.on the barrel in front of the nipple is the serial number (low 1000) in front of that is a diamond shape with an H in it. Below that is a large MN stamped in the barrel. on the tang area, behind the fixed rear site is a large scrolled M and the lower case le then "1842" then a large screw head then a scrolled (possibly) T. on the left side of the barrel opposite the nipple is an oval with a "M" and a small symbol over it inside the oval. Behind that is another oval with an "S" with another symbol over it inside the oval. The barrel has three bands and is 40 1/8 "inches

I have found a handload using 46gr of Varget powder that yields 2820fps. Many have said that this is a 200 yard max cartridge. It seems that it may have longer effective range than that considering the factory loads list the '06 165s at 2800fps. I know good handloads can get them near 3000, but that is not my point. What do you think about max range with this load and a Hornady Interbond bullet or something similiar? Thank you.

I know a 30 caliber has more frontal area and is considered better for this alone, but how about a 270 firing a 160 grain nosler partition between 2700 and 2800fps. Some say penetraton is what it is all about and place less emphasis on frontal area(the best of both worlds would be ideal,I suppose), but if this is the case then why not almost any caliber from 243 on up with a Barnes bullet(they are almost armor piercing from what I have heard) They make a 130gr tsx for my 6.5x55 and I can drive at 3000fps. They should penetrate very well and shoot plenty flat. Should I get a 270...something bigger...or am I good with my Swede?

I know this is an adequate caliber for elk, but was wondering if anyone has experience or opinions for a good load. I am buying a light gun(6lbs.) and was also considering a 308 win or 270, but I think the'06 handles the heavier bullets better. What do you recommend? Thanks everyone.

The 225 grain pellet is larger than many firearm bullets, but I bet some of you think it is a toy.

I am selling the above gun. It is a Steyr Mannlicher Model M Carbine with 20" barrel. 30-06 Springfield Caliber. Made in Austria has set trigger and is right side bolt. The rifle was purchased in 1971 and has rarely been used. Roughly 50 shots! I am expecting $1,700 for the rifle! Is that too much or not enough? There are only minor scratches in the wood on the stock which can easily be oiled and worked out to be perfect.
