I don't plan on doing any hunting with it, but I've been looking at the Remington 870 Tactical shotgun with the 18" barrel. The 870 has been around for years and has an excelent track record. Any advice from the gun inthusiust?

It's going to be used for the local skunks that keep tearing up my lawn looking for grubs and for self protection.

My old 870 is well over 30 years old now. Still as reliable as the day I got it. Great value for the money.

I have always went with the Mossberg 500 defender for home protection. Its cheaper than the 870 yet in my opinion it out performs the Remington.

The safety on the 500 is much more easy to flick off than the one on the 870 and there are tons of ways to customize the 500. Dont get me wrong, both are good guns but there is a reason the mossberg 500 is the only shotgun to ever meet military spec.

I added the Sidewinder 10 round drum conversion to my 500 and I must say that its pretty amazing. A 12 guage shotgun with 10 round drums that are as easy to change as clips. I have 4 drums/clips totaling 40 rounds, no way anyone is messing with anything on my property ; )

The Remington 870 Shotgun is a great pump action shotgun and I know you should have some good times with one. I think your on the right track with what gun to get.

Go with the 870 in any style. for about !50 bucks you can turn a hunting shotgun into a bad *** home defense/ tactical shotty. Go to cheaperthandirt.com and look up shotgun accessories. they have barrels, tube extensions, stocks, everything.

I have the Remington 870 Express Magnum , 7 shot model. It is a good home defense or camp shotgun.

be careful with the 18" barrel. some localities have restrictions on the length of a barrel. but you can't go wrong with a remington. they are the ones that set the standards and make the best shotguns, my opinion. i would choose either the remington or a mossberg 590 or 500. you can't make a mistake in buying either one.

Hello,,killing those tactical skunks? if you want a shotgun to kill skunks you ain't quite right with the fact that you're gonna stink the whole place up!!Just poison the little stinkers so you ain't got to pick up stinky in pieces! A 22LR to the head works good too , if you can shoot straight. I'd buy the Mossberg 500 w/pistol grip and in 410 guage for home defense, you won't be scared to pull the trigger!!

good choice - Mossberg is also good and cheaper if that's an issue
I'm looking at Mossberg 930SPX myself but I need auto-loader
if you want to try it with just pistol grip - don't throw away regular stock because you will be putting it back on
pattern the gun at distances you might use it with shells you plan on using for defense (nothing smaller than #4 buckshot) - have seen some guns do some strange things with different shot size and/or manufacturer - some of new loads are low recoil and flash
might want to add mount for tactical light
again - good choice - one of best pump guns on market

my fav shotgun is the remington 1100; best gun i've ever used, hunting (in counties where rifles aren't legal to hunt w/), skeet shooting, bird hunting; jsut a great all around gun

btu thats my personal opinion; you may enjoy the reming. 870 tact more than the 1100

18 inches might be a brush working weapon but I'd want 24 inches for fowl or nearby big game. I favor walnut stock side by side with 12/20 gauge loads under single selective trigger and hammer fire (cowboy action style). Over-under is also favored in 12 gauge 24 bbl with 7.62x39 rifle in 8 lb. break-open with walnut. For 'defense' 12 gauge Saiga magazine fed 10+1 carry ability using AK action in black synthetic field
stock has bbl from 19 to 24 inch lengths; a cold killer.
