I want to buy a gun to keep in the home. Any advice? I've shot several guns in the past but nothing within the last 5 years.

If youare not biased in favor big bores, I would look at any of the numerous 9mm pistols available on the market or a .38 SPL full-size revolver (preferably a used S&W if you can find it). You are lucky if this is just for self-defense and you are not a gun nut like me. The more into guns you are, the harder the choice. Make sure not to spend too much money (like $500 or more) because you do not have to do that.

If you're looking to buy a gun for home defense, nothing beats a 12 gauge shotgun. Handguns are more oriented toward target shooting and plinking. However if you're looking for a handgun for target shooting, get a revolver in either .17 HMR or .22 Long rifle because ammo is cheap.

I like the Browning Hi-Power 9mm myself but a Smith & Wesson 357 Magnum Revolver would be a nice choice too. For home protection you could go with any caliber from a 38 on up. Always keep the gun where children can't get at it!

For starters what is your intentions on buying this firearm for the house? Is it to deter buglers? As I would suggest getting a home security alarm system instead of a firearm for deterring home invasions.

If the firearm is going to be used for target shooting I would go with a lighter calibre as you can shoot more without the dreaded recoil spoiling your shooting.

You mention that you want a handgun, I'd suggest the .40cal Glock, which is a good firearm or the Smith & Wession 9mm.

If your interested in rifles, what is your intention with regards to shooting? After you define that, you will be able to look at the different calibres and models.

I hope this helps

The best choice for your purpose is nothing less than a 357 magnum with a 4" barrel made by Smith & Wesson because you can also shoot 38 caliber ammo in it also.* You get two (2)* handguns for the price of one (1)*.. It is a proven man stopper.* It is a great revolver & comfortable to shoot.*

get an a CZ-75 or some sort of copy like an IMI baby eagle or an AR-24 pistol all are excellent choices, but get a shotgun, think about it, its easier to retain when your groggy, also a standard aluminum bat weighs somethings like 40 ounces, a couple of lbs, the mossberg 500 or 590 (recomended) weighs almost 8lbs, when or if u run out of ammo, u have an 8 lbs club, and i dont care what anyone says a human will do anything to survive and im sure a nice good whack upside someones head with and aluminum reciever will put em out.

For home defense, nothing beats a shotgun. 12 ga. pumps offer all the range you need indoors, without the threat of overpenetration (as long as you load #3 or smaller buck), and they are almost impossible to miss with. For handguns, I prefer a .38 revolver. You can keep a revolver loaded forever and never have to worry about it not shooting. Autos require periodic maintenance, even when they aren't loaded or even fired.

Go with a revolver, much simpler to use. Even if you know how to use an auto-loader, a revolver is much faster to get into action.

Get something in .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .44 Spacial, .44 Magnum, or .45 Long Colt. They are powerful and common.

A revolver in .38 Special/.357 Magnum, and get some firearms training at your local gun club or range.

Springfield Armory XD, Ruger p series or the new SR9, Taurus, Beretta, Sig, are some of my favorites. I prefer the XDs over anything. I would suggest either 9mm or .45acp. I never like the .40 caliber.
