How can you tell who manufactured a 30/06? What characteristics and such?

My father bought a 30/06 in the early 1970's. He rarely used it. In 2005 he passed away and now I have it. I know nothing about guns at all. I don't hunt and don't want to. I was just wandering how much its worth? Its a bolt action with a shoulder strap and a scope. Its in almost perfect condition and has been collecting dust for almost 30 years. And is it legal to sell a gun to just anyone?

I did. My buddy in the back! It was an accident of course.
It ricoched off a rock when we were out shooting at Lyttle Creek. Luckily it just grazed him. Has anything like that happened to you?
