Guns don't have VINs, they have serial numbers. The manufacturers name should be stamped into the barrel of the rifle near the reciever, along with a safety disclaimer, model info and the caliber.

Most guns are marked on the top, or side, of the barrel. Of course, whether or not you can SEE this info depends on the age and cleanliness of the weapon. Oh, and it's usually right in front of the sight, or below it. And characteristics can't really tell you, because you might have a Remington with a Mauser action, and that would just confuse you if we claimed there was one overriding feature that would tell you that.

It should be in graved on the left side of the barrel or on the bottom of the stock.

it should tell you on the side of the barrel. the numbers and words on the action are not always the gun maker.

If its not on the barrel, try the Serial number. when you have that...cross reference it with this:
