In the US I know many consider the Jets winning Super Bowl III over the Baltimore Colts as a major upset (even though it was guaranteed by Joe), as well as the 69 NY Mets winning the World Series (also against a Baltimore team).
I think that the US hockey team winning the gold medal at the 1980 Olympics is the biggest team upset. This included their upset of what was essentially a professional Russian team, which had beaten them 10-3 less than a year before. In fact the win against Finland to capture the gold was almost a footnote.
In individual sports, I would say Leon Spinks' defeat of Mohammed Ali on Feb 15, 1978. No Olympic champion had ever challeged the reigning world champion with less experience, except for Pete Rademacher who faced Floyd Patterson in his first professional fight in 1956. Though Ali was aging (36) and out of shape, the split decision in favor of Spinks was a shock though the victory was clearly earned.
What do you think are the greatest upsets?
