In the US I know many consider the Jets winning Super Bowl III over the Baltimore Colts as a major upset (even though it was guaranteed by Joe), as well as the 69 NY Mets winning the World Series (also against a Baltimore team).

I think that the US hockey team winning the gold medal at the 1980 Olympics is the biggest team upset. This included their upset of what was essentially a professional Russian team, which had beaten them 10-3 less than a year before. In fact the win against Finland to capture the gold was almost a footnote.

In individual sports, I would say Leon Spinks' defeat of Mohammed Ali on Feb 15, 1978. No Olympic champion had ever challeged the reigning world champion with less experience, except for Pete Rademacher who faced Floyd Patterson in his first professional fight in 1956. Though Ali was aging (36) and out of shape, the split decision in favor of Spinks was a shock though the victory was clearly earned.

What do you think are the greatest upsets?

Buster Douglass over Mike Tyson. ( at the time Tyson was the undisputed and youngest heavyweight champ, who was or still is Buster )

Duke over UNLV ( at that time Duke had went to many Final Fours but always lost, and there was know reason to think different this time because UNLV were trying to repeat, they had beat every team they played by a avg. of 20, they were undefeated and they had just beat Duke year by 20 in the Championship )

Red Sox coming back from a 0-3 deficit and sweeping the Yankees out of the playoffs. ( Nuff Said )

Reds vs the A's in the World Series ( the Reds flew in the World Series under the Radar, know body had given the a shot. The A's were in the 3rd World Series and were defending Champs. The A's had it all Speed on the Bases, pitching, power. But the Reds murder them from the 1st pitch...to the Last out of that World Series. )

Patriots over the Rams in the Superbowl ( The Rams were dubbed " The Greatest Show on Turf. They had already won a Superbowl. They had MVP players on there team " Warner, Faulk and Hall of Fame-rs Holt and Bruce. and they were wrecking every NFL offensive record there were. The Patriots in the past was 1 of the worst teams of all time, They posted a 0-2 record in the Superbowl when they did go.
And Brady was the back up not the starter. But someone forgot to tell the Rams.....That the past was the past )
