What I am trying to do here is make my own Thai Boxing Heavy Bag. So I want it to be long like one, however I would like it to be heavier than most Thai bags out there. I have found quite a few that I would love to buy, but what can I say, if I can make something thats just as good for alot less money, that is the route I want to go.

I want the bag to be about 5 feet tall, the normal circumfrence of a boxing heavy bag, and weigh about 180 to 200 pounds. I would ofcourse use it to practice my Muay Thai, but I would also use it in similar fashion to a grappling bag, so it would need to be strong enough to be slammed on the ground and pounded on there as well.

I have a friend who works with upholstery for vehicles, so he has a wicked sewing machine for the thick and tough materials I know I will need. But he has never made one, so what I need to do is come up with the diminsions, suggested material, etc.

Suppose you were walking in the desert with what you were wearing and your sword. Along comes a pack of hyenas--you have to kill or be killed. You take out your sword and slash one of them and the rest of them flee. Since there are no leaves around to clean your sword, should you just wipe your sword on the hyena's hide, put the sword back in its sheath, and move on?

I recently joined a Kung-fu club and got my white belt/sash. Ive seen the students bow to the master, (one fist is closed, the other hand is flat over the other one). I just wanted to know, is it left over right, or right over left? does it even matter?

I don't want to seem disrespectful. Thanks in advance for answers.

I have been absent from Y/A because of this problem. I have a friend who is a black belt in Aikido. He was at the bar and got attacked by a guy who thought he was flirting with his girl friend a little to much. the guy came in swinging. My friend flipped him and put him in some sort of arm pin (I don't know the names). he put pressure on it until the guy told him to stop. after that we left the bar. Later that month he got papers saying he was getting sewed. The other guy almost won the case citing a bunch of fake injuries, but my friends parents are kind of made of money, so they hired a private investagator that found a security tape of it. The bar tender, attorney and some doctor were in on it now there all being charged and sewed. My friends attorney said this happens thousands of times a year with out the good endings that we were lucky enough to have. So what if anything can we do to prevent these types of atrocities from happening. sorry if there are to many misspellings.

arent they really asking "which style can I be effective at in the least amount of time"?... then the forms argument... if you learn forms, you are adding things in your training that are not immediatley (if ever) effective for your fighting skill.... and you take class time away from "actual" fighting techniques to learn these.... I can imagine, that you could teach any style that has forms without them, to increase the "effectivness" , but it does take away from the "art", the reason MT is so effective (IMO) is that the entire class time is geared towards fighting, but if Kung Fu, Karate, or Tae Kwon Do, taught their art in the same mannor, then they would produce "better fighters faster", and remember that not all Martial Arts Practicioners want to fight... anyway, wanted some other thoughts

Hi, does anyone know a film (or tv series) that looked kind of 80s and had a curly haired cop who was taught martial arts by an old Asian master. All I remember is he was taught how to walk on wet concrete and one of the exercises he was given to do involved repeatedly tapping his index finger onto a wooden board. Does this ring any bells for anyone?? Thanks

I've noticed that the fighers of the eastern world were thinner, but yet still strong, very strong; and the fighters of the western world were big and bulky. Why are these two cultures different from one another in strength/physique. Which culture had the most strength?

knowing they cannot stand without it, telling them they before hand they did not have to do a physical test due to being disabled but had to show i knew all the mental aspects and could teach a class. I was failed because I was told I am not disabled though my Drs, Lawyers and SSDI say differently and I fell three times hurting my knee and back attempting to please them for my test.

Were they wrong to have made me do something they knew I could not possibly do physically and it landed me in the Hospital?

Would they not be held accountable for it? I too am a Nidan and was testing for Sandan and passed ALL the written, oral and other misc parts of the exam. i could not do the Katas physically and to make me was an insult, and it embarrased and humiliated me in front of everyone i could not stay up without my cane.

Am I wrong to be upset or is what they did despicable treatment of a disabled person who can barely walk?

Please tell me honestly what you think. Thanks!

Guys I notice very little interest in the fighting arts of Europe. Such as the masters like Talhoffer, Fiore, Silver and the rapier masters.

Hollywood educates everyone that oriental martial artists have all the skill whereas knights are always seen as clumsy guys wielding huge heavy swords and no skill.

In reality Asia was actually a pretty peaceful region compared to Europe.Countries there could go hundreds of years without a major shift in power.

In Europe people were crossing borders every week for a fight.
The whole reason we ended up with guns was a constant striving to develope the greatest fighting advantages possible just to survive.

Our weapons were actually lighter than asian weapons(mainly because europe had much better steel) and the guys using them had to be able to do everything up to and including fencing bare bodied.
Which is as fast as any fighting style there is.

So what is this mystique surrounding the oriental arts?

I have compiled detailed information taken from my experience training in the martial arts, correctional work, bail enforcement and bouncing, to put together a report outlining target areas on the human body that I know to work. The target audience are those interested in self defense or fighting. (NOT FOR CHILDREN!!!)

I think I have found a good karate school, but I wanted to get opinions from people with more experience than me. I'm only 14 and I've never done martial arts so I'm not really sure how to tell if a school is good. The one I found is very focused on sparring and you have to get reports from school and home saying your are respectful and have good academics before you can test for a belt. the testing fees are as follows.

High White $15, Gold $39, High Gold $39, Orange $39, High Orange $39, Green $59, High Green $59, Purple $59, High Purple $59, Blue $59, High Blue $59, Red $79, Low Brown $79, Brown $79, High Brown $79, Conditional Black $99, First Degree Black $200, Second Degree Black $500, Third Degree Black $500.

Are these prices reasonable? From the sounds of this school would you attend, why or why not?

Oh, and they are REALLY persistant to enforce respect. They have all these rules for speaking with instructors and speeches you say before starting class and when you end.
