I'm not a BJJ practitioner, but I am a nurse. The media is GREATLY overhyping this "super bug." Yeah, it is a problem, but it CAN be treated, however there is only one antibiotic that works on it. It is basically a staph infection that has decided that it doesn't want the "cillin" family of drugs to kill it. Most of the people who get MRSA (Methicillin resistant staph. aureous) are patients in hospitals, and the bug is most often transmitted by (gasp) health care professionals. I would not worry about it too much.

--EDIT--
I forgot to say this when I wrote it, but MRSA has been around for a pretty long time. There should be no doctor who cannot recognise it. I know at the military hospital I work at, every infection that we get is cultured to see if it is MRSA, so I don't understand why this article is emphasizing not being able to recognise it. As a nurse, without tests, I can usually tell if it is a MRSA infection or not. Also, they say that it can kill in days....are they taking into consideration overall health and hygiene? probably not. This story is written to get a response, not to accurately portray information.

Yes; they have a suspected outbreak of it in St Louis, MO where they believe a student may have contracted it and died. Thirty five years ago if you were wrestling in high school and contracted staff infection you were suspended from competing for ten days and it required a doctors clearance to get back out on the mats and work out and wrestle. That's because it can be so contagious so keep your mats clean by mopping them every day with a mixture of Lysol with disinfectant and water. The new super strain is something that has come on the scene in the last several years and is becoming more prevalent and is resistant to antibiotics. Also encourage your students to wear only clean uniforms and workout clothes; not something that then fold up or leave in their gym bag and pull out and dress out in. Keep handy and out in the open some of those moist toilette's tubes for your students to use and encourage them to get any persistent rashes checked out. While the super bug strain is not as prevalent staff infection has been around for years.

I've had it, its not at all worse than normal staph, just shower after practice, clean the mats, check your body and don't roll with people who have a big white spot(like a hugely overgrown pimple) any where on their body. Its been in hospitals for a long time(which is where I got it) its just that recently its gotten into the general population, doctors have ways to deal with it, just go see one if you get it.
Its not resistant to ALL antibiotics just one particular and very common type of antibiotics, this happens to all groups of antibiotics eventually, as bacteria continue to evolve, penicillin for instance doesn't work on almost anything anymore, its just that this time the media has gotten involved. there are plenty of other types of antibiotics that can be used against it.

Take a shower after class, treat cuts and scratches with anti-bacterial cleaners, wear a rash guard.
