My friend and I are thinking of enrolling into some martial arts classes. More for self-defense and whatnot. We need something that would be good for girls to use, that doesn't require alot of force to still be effective. We are both 16, would it matter if we waited a couple of years to take it? If you guys would please state which of the martial arts would be the best and why, that would be great.

but now my sifu says that i should enter a juveinlile tournament next year, he said i could do very well as i spar quite good with the more experinced lot

or i could wait till im 16, but when i turn 16 the catogoreis are gonna be judged depending on height,
and obvioulsly i will get owned by some of the ppl who are 6ft and over

should i start training now, and the next yr comp is semi contact
so i think i could easily beat all of them

I have entered a weapons kata tournament and am looking for some advice.

I am very confident using a boken and have come 3rd and 4th in previous club tournaments. I want to improve on this but I know that the standard of the other competitors is very high (one guy can use two bokens at once).

I was thinking that I might use a pair of sai as no-one has ever used these in our competitions before, almost everyone uses a boken or nunchucks, and people who use two weapons generally do better than those who only use one. However, I have had less experience with these and have only 4 weeks before the competition in which to create and practise a brand new kata.

So my question is this. From a judges point of view which would you find more impressive, a well executed but common boken kata, or a new kata with a weapon you haven't seen before?

PS: does anyone know of any good videos on the net that show people using sais?

every Martial art is solid against, an untrained opponent... or against an opponent of less ability of the same style... but wha every MA lacks is the ability to defend against other styles... It seems to me, from the limited knowledge I have , that this block works for that kick (in MA #1) and that block works for this kick (ma #2), but this block (from #1) will get you hurt from that kick (ma #2) and vice versa?..... just curious as to other views

I never learned any Martial Arts before, so I am gonna be new to this and I wont know anything. My main reason for Martial Arts is self-defense, so I was wondering about how long would it take me to learn how to defend myself, or like if I get in a fight with somebody who doesn't know martial arts or anything, then how long would it take me if I wanna guarantee to win the fight even if the other guy was strong?

Thanks in advance

Almost every time I go to my karate dojo, I always seem to end up paired with this man who is several inches taller than me and considerably better built. I'm 16, he's a grown man, we can both spar well but he just kicked my ***.

He swats away what I consider my best stuff, as if he were swatting away irritating flies.I remember myself sending a big spinning kick his way, and he caught it, leaving me hopping stupidly for a couple seconds. And then he hits me again and again, getting under my guard with a combination of feinting, making me flinch, and spinning attacks.

And he does all this with a benign smile on his face, as though he was watching a small child struggling to spell a difficult word. It's infuriating, not to mention annoying.

Sigh...

How bad have you ever been beaten when you spar?

First of all I personally believe it is a very effective self defense system, HOWEVER during a submission grappling tournment I met an assistant instructor who trained 12 years in Krav Maga. He also trained in Isreal for 6 of those years. And he also crosstrained in Kenpo and Submission grappling. He said Krav Maga is awesome when it comes to multiple attackers and knive defense against UNTRAINED attackers, BUT it LACKS the well rounded skill in a one-on-one no weapon fight against another semi-trained fighter! He gave me two examples that he witnessed. Example 1 he said he saw a Kenpo fighter knock out a Krav Maga instructor after only 1 minute of fighting during a full contact no rules fight in a parking lot. The second example he gave me was when a MMA fighter challenged a Krav Maga instuctor to a no holds barred anything goes match on the street NOT in a ring! Apparently the MMA guy took the Krav Maga instructor down and punched the instructor out cold!

Your opinions?

When throwing a straight right punch, I heard that you can increase your power if you rotate your fist 90 degrees at the end of your punch (starting with your fist vertical, ending horizontal). I have experimented on a heavy bag and found that this is indeed true. What is the reason for this phenomenon?

For instance, my style, Isshinryu Karate, would probably be best seen as "Clinch" fighting, though there are a few throws, and many non-clinch strikes....
(I'm using http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_martial_arts under "Strategies" for terminology)
1 Sprawl-and-brawl
2 Clinch fighting
3 Ground-and-pound
4 Submission grappling
5 Lay-and-pray
6 Weapon fighting

My 6 year old daughter has just completed a 6 month foundation course of Jeet Kun Do and attained her orange belt on saturday. My wife and i were told she is ready to step up to a 3 year masters class to attain her black belt.Although i am really pleased with her progress and attitude to martial arts the fees for the course seem a little excessive, can someone tell me if i am right or is this about average:

£290 flat fee+36 months@£69 per month.

The school is in Birmingham and she can attend up to 4 classes per week at 45 minutes per class.

I'd like to sign up for some form of Martial Arts classes. I'm in so-so shape (not fat, but definitely not athletic). I've previously taken Tae Kwon Do and Shaolin Kempo when I was younger, but I'll be honest in saying I don't know what really makes those styles unique.

How do I go about finding which style I should look into?

As I live in a major city, there should be dozens of studios in my area. Other than looking in the phone book, how do I find what's in my area? How do I find out which are the best, or the one for me?

I'm 14 and I'm going to be starting karate soon. I'm so nervous that I'm going to look so stupid compared to the little kids who are already awesome. I don't really know how things work around there and I'm positive that I'm going to screw up my first day. Any tips for basically anything relating to karate or how to get over my nerves?
