I do Kenpo through the schools community education program. Kenpo is all about self defense. My teacher is female and 100 pounds lighter then me and I could not ever begin to take her. She is to fast and experienced.
In Kenpo everything I have been taught is self defense against different attacks such as
Roundhouse punch
Choke from the front
Push from the back
Kick
Club attack from the side
It will take some time to learn but it is well worth it and it is a skill you will have for a lifetime. Not to mention as you age it is a great way to stay toned and flexable.

Ok first off there is no perfect martial art for anyone. Aikido takes a lot of room to use while karate uses more brute force and strength. I recommend not a martial art for self defense but Close Combat Self Defense it is a brutal and deadly way to defend your self and only uses gross moter skills! If you are looking for only a martial art for fitness however I suggest, moo duc kwon tae kwon do this style of TKD is a very intense workout while giving very good self defense lessons. Any martial art girls can do, I have met girls that are better than most guys. So sex has nothing to do with being a good martial artist.

The other people don't know what they're talking about.
As a girl, you don't want to try striking with a man or you will get knocked out.
Wing Chun, aikido, etc. aren't martial arts. They're expressive dance.
Martial arts in America are MMA, boxing, muay thai, wrestling, and BJJ.
Try Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. It's a form of submission grappling.
In fighting tough, strength is a huge factor so as a girl you never want to really fight a man. BJJ is your best bet though as it removes strength more than anything else.

Wing Chung is by far the best for light framed people. That said it may be the quality of the school that makes more difference. Good art plus bad school is a wast of time. OK art and great school is a better choice. Make sure the focus is on street self defense. Find a school where the Master instructor spends time on the floor. Beware of the McDojo. They take your money and time and give you a false sense of security.
Don't Waite to start. Make it a priority to find a good school. The world is becoming an unfriendly place. Especially for young women. Good luck!

Martial arts are fine art forms for beauty and skill, but not so much for realistic self defense. Much better to find and take real self defense classes if that's what you're looking for. For one thing, in the arts class you have to "pull" your kicks so you're not really hitting the target, and chances are in a real life situation you won't think fast enough and will still be pulling kicks. Good training means you can do what you need to quickly without thinking.

I would shop around and observe the classes of the schools in your area and any that offer a good program in self-defense and have female students may be a good indication that it is the right one for you. Some schools are more competition or fight oriented than self-defense oriented. Also some are very heavily male oriented and power/strength oriented so they are not as suited for women either. Some good schools and instructors have a balance of students and programs and others don't. There are some good ones that don't want to try to cater to everyone or have a balanced program so those you may want to avoid. So shop the schools and instructors not so much the styles and if there are other female students there attending in any number then thats a good indication that it might be a good school for you.

In the end you have to decide what YOU want to train in. Visit the schools/clubs/dojos around your area and if one "calls to you" go for it. I will offer my opinion on a FEW martial arts, if you'd like my opinion on more msg me.
Aikido/Tai-Chi/Bagua - Great arts IMO but they do have a bit of a learning curve. They are very effective but in both it it said that after 10 years of study you have reached your "first step." If you are looking for something you can apply quickly these are not for you.
Wing Chun - A very scientific system of Kung-Fu. It focuses on trapping and jamming up the opponent's limbs so they cannot attack you. Very affective against many styles and larger people but is still a striking art nonetheless.
Judo - AIki-Jiujutsu derivative created by Jigaro Kano for sport purposes and physical education. Avoid if you are looking for a self defense system.
Brazilian Jiujutsu - derivative of the above system
Krav Maga - very effective art created by the Israelis. Great for self defense but seems to lack ability to control the opponent.
Karate: Mainly taught as a sport. Not Japanese as many believe but Okinawan (big difference). Would not reccommend for self defense.
