Judo is a full contact grappling sport.

Tae kwond do is semi contact striking sport emphasising kicks.

Tai chi is no contact forms style(like dancing or yoga really).

All are freindly and safe and fun.

If you wanted to burn a lot of calories, get rid of stress, develope strength, learn to defend yourself, and don't mind getting sweaty rolling around you would do judo.

If you want to burn a few calories, get less sweaty, learn a bit less self defence but look very cool learning the flashiest kicks you would do taekwondo.

If you don't want to learn anything to with fighting do tai chi.

No martial art is better than another: Training style is what matters, but you could be looking for a whole lot of things here. You said PE, so is this for fitness, or self-defense?

If you're looking for fitness: I would suggest Tae Kwon Do or Judo (Unless your class is teaching Tai Chi Chuan, which is the actual martial art of "Supreme Ultimate God Fist").

Judo is a throwing martial art. There's very little striking, but there's lots of grappling, throwing, and some ground work. You will learn submissions.

Tae Kwon Do is a striking art, that IS NOT always semi contact in nature. Most styles of Tae Kwon Do will favor kicking over punching (A ratio of 70/30 usually), but some do not (Moo Duk Kwan for example). Tae Kwon Do stresses flexibility, and hard, linear striking. Remember, however: It's plagued with bad teaching. If you're doing it for fitness: You should be fine, but if self defense is included, you have to make sure you are learning good things.

Tai-Chi is a slow, flowing, martial art. Self-Defense takes a while to kick in, but the exercises are easy, and they will keep you very calm. Tai Chi Chuan is the more fight oriented application of the former, but you probably don't have that.

It's up to you.
Striking- Tae Kwon Do.
Throwing- Judo
Tai-Chi- Striking movements, and possibly striking.
Good luck.

Judo consists of a lot of throws. So your going to be hitting the mat quite a few times during training. Something to consider.

It's better thant TKD for self defence IMHO.

You cannot really say which is "better" because they all have their own strengths and weaknesses..

I think I've been told that Tae-kwon-do is fairly easy to learn.
