Almost every time I go to my karate dojo, I always seem to end up paired with this man who is several inches taller than me and considerably better built. I'm 16, he's a grown man, we can both spar well but he just kicked my ***.

He swats away what I consider my best stuff, as if he were swatting away irritating flies.I remember myself sending a big spinning kick his way, and he caught it, leaving me hopping stupidly for a couple seconds. And then he hits me again and again, getting under my guard with a combination of feinting, making me flinch, and spinning attacks.

And he does all this with a benign smile on his face, as though he was watching a small child struggling to spell a difficult word. It's infuriating, not to mention annoying.

Sigh...

How bad have you ever been beaten when you spar?

For my brown belt test... many years ago... I had to fight Dai Sempai. He tore me a few new buttholes.

I was in pain for almost two weeks.

The first time I sparr in muay thai, I did with a friend of mine.

My friend had already fought several times, he's very experienced.

Since he was my friend I thought that he was going to go easy on me.

He kicked, punched, kneed and elbowed me at will, i could not land A SINGLE PUNCH the entire time, I felt really bad, the only thing I was able to do is push and hold him for a bit, since I'm alot bigger (this guys was very strong, even he was slim).

I didn't train muay thai for almost a month after that, I felt completely embarrased, in a nutshell, I got pwned.

Eventually my friend encouraged me to keep training, and I did, after that I developed a solid defense, good low kicks, and good clinch, I have good punches too but I don't like to hit people on the face (unless they do it to me, I'm happy to return the favor).

When I did karate I loved kumite, as a 14 year old I only took adult classes, so i know your pain. When I sparred bigger guys (90% of the class), some of them would go really hard. A combination that helped me alot was the front sweep, and follow inmediatelly with a punch. Work on your kicks to keep your opponents far away from you, if you are shorter you need to work on your speed.

I know what you've been through, but a true warrior keeps training after a defeat in battle, so you come back stronger.

good luck my friend!

I went into a tourney against a guy that was the same size, and allegedly, the same rank. I was timid, reserved and a nervous wreck. In the first thirty seconds, the match was pretty much decided. He was absolutely kicking my A$s. No mercy. He wanted to punish me for wasting his time. In the last minute of the match I decided I didn't like getting pummeled, and started to fight back. But it was way too late to win the match. I took three kicks to the face in the first thirty seconds, and lost a contact from one of them. One ref decided that he and his brother were "either black belts in another art or they have the best damn instructor in the world." But they couldn't prove that was true, so they continued competing. In the end, 5' 5" Leonardo beat 6' 5" Colin from Kentucky. So I was either pummeled by a prodigy or a cheat (it was the novice division). Either way I decided I would never go in afraid again. And I haven't since.

And my instructor does the smiling thing. God damn I hate that!

congratulations... you have learned, that you have more to learn.... a former TKD guy.... learning MT... It is fun for me to sparr with the guys "feet only", my eyes get big and I start to smile... then the next round ... hands only... I grit my teeth and take a beating, but I have learned to take a beating with a smile, I only smile because I know I will someday learn... pain is temporary.. knowledge is forever
