do you think that fairly soon if UFC and stuff like that continues, that there will be more mcdojos in the arts that are "supposed" to work than the ones everyone stereotypes as having all the mcdojos? after all nowadays people make one hour tapes of MMA and sell them to people who then claim to be experts and teach people. and now people are bashing the old arts so some of the new people who come to train hear that an art sucks, so all the money will go to muay thai and BJJ schools and soon those will have the most mcdojos. agree or disagree?

As a student of Hillcrest High School, I have trained in Kenpo, traditional Tae Kwan Do, Aikido, Haikido, and Silat, some also with the use of weaponry (Sai, Kama, Bo, Staff, Katana, etc.). I come upon many people that, just because they don't know martial arts, say that it doesn't work, or it won't protect you. I know that it works perfectly well, I have fought with it before and never lost, but when they want to "slap-box" me or "play-box" me, I refuse, and they taunt me and poke fun at martial artists until I put a palm strike into their shoulder and up into their chin. Two most common sayings: "Martial arts do not work, dude.", and the famous belief that all martial artists know Karate also comes into play here.

For example, do you simulate fighting in a room full of furniture, uneven terrain, or constricted space. Just curious how others might train for these situations. And please don't answer if it is going to be a this style is better than that style for this and that. It is about training not styles. Give me some drills you use if any, and include the scenario, levels of resistance, and equipment if any.

When it comes to attack, defence against one or more people?

2007-11-06 05:51:09 · 11 answers · asked by Anonymous

In UFC 1 the world learned that if you don't know submissions and the person you're fighting is good at submissions, you're going to lose a fight. That's a fact, not an opinion. It's not saying that if two fighters both have some submission knowledge the one that's better at submissions will win. It's just saying that if a guy that's studied nothing but tkd for 5 years fights a guy that studied nothing but bjj for 5 years, the bjj guy will win 99.9% of the time, size being equal. That's no revelation, it's just common sense, but when you say it on this forum all these sensitive traditional martial artists get their feelings hurt and start attacking you (verbally). Why is that? I think people don't want to acknowledge that what they've been spending their time on is inferior to something else that they could have spent their time on. Perhaps tkd/kung fu/karate and the like just attract an insecure type of person. Thoughts?

Is this something innate or can this be developed just like kick, punch or submission skills? Overtime will a fighter increase mental strength and ability to push from within?

I see alot of younger guys train and they have the athletic tools but they don't know how to fight through adversity and I'm just wondering if you all think this casn be developed or you either have it or not?

So I have over 30 old uniforms, most of them with my school logo on the back, and I only want to keep about 5-6 of them. They are various weights and colors. Can anyone suggest where I can sell or donate them in the NYC area, or perhaps online? Some examples of my uniforms: traditional white (also blue and black) karate medium weight, taekwondo v-neck light weight (all white or black collar). Thanks!

Basically I would like to find a good MA for my skeletal problems. My legs bow inwards (the bones are bent; genu valgum and coxa vera), my legs are also twisted inwards... if my knees are pointing forwards my feet point inwards... something to do with the upper leg, I think. Also plica in my hips, knees and ankles, which causes a somewhat painful snapping/popping in those joints (but mainly the hips) when certain movements are done.

I did TKD for about 3 years and was actually pretty good at it, but it was too tournament based and has put too much stress on my knees so that even now, a few years later, my knees are sore from normal walking. Also, my muscles were still much weaker than those of a normal person, due to the alignment being off so the wrong muscles get used and the right ones don't. I'm trying my best with physical therapy to straighten them out, but any advice on good martial arts for me would be more than welcome, thanks.

OK I fight MMA. The problem is that I've done traditional martial arts my whole life. I have defended myself on a couple of occasions but now I have the whole mind set to not throw the first punch. is there any way out of this or should I just do like I did in my first fight and wait until he throws then counter. I know I hit hard so I'd like to hit him first but I can't seem to shake this mind set. your oppinions are apreciated

How much should you train/work out the day before a fight? Is it better to rest or train?

Also, is it better to do two 10 minutes sessions of jumping rope or one 20 minutes session? Does it make any difference?

Thanks!
