I'll learn martial arts for self defense when all the criminals are disarmed.

Till then.........don't break into my home and point a gun at me. You'll get a gut full of 9mm slugs.

When I was much younger and going to college I had a job where large amounts of money were taken in and out for deposits and the area was not a good area. The crowds could be rough and unruly so there was always plenty of security evident and on hand-most of it armed. In the two situations where I have drawn a weapon but did not fire, one being in that job the other while in the military with some third country nationals that did not speak English in a not so nice place either they understood what that drawn weapon meant. I have also drawn and fired that weapon in combat and I have to say that while some parts of the world and societies would be better off without guns there are others that exist because that is the only thing that sometimes stands in peoples way that would do harm to others or that society. Drawing a sword and hacking someone to death is no more honorable or different than drawing a weapon and firing it. I can tell you from experience though that they respect that gun a lot faster and its deadly force so that they just might live another day than if I had been armed with just a sword.

A gun is OK for self defense, it can be very useful at many situations, however you must know that you can't carry guns anywhere, there are some places that prohibits you to carry your handgun, an airport is one example. Also not all country allows you to carry your gun. And a gun is expensive to buy (Not if it is an airsoft gun), also you must take care of it, make sure it is in a safe place. Martial Arts skills, however you'll always remember them if you've mastered it and is already automatically comes into play when someone attacks you in close range. A gun is also dangerous to use by untrained person, since you can accidentally shoot innocents. If you're afraid of criminals using guns, try to learn Krav Maga which adresses to deal with guns in close range, there will be a small chance that criminals will shoot you at a distance, they will usually come close to you then points a gun at point blank range, and then demands your money, it will be less likely they shoot you at a distance then search your corpse for your wallet.

Swords, however are impractical for self defense unless you carry a sword all the time which is awkward and also a menace to the society. Perhaps you can use something that resembles as a sword but not as effective (i.e a cane, sticks?). IMO a dagger or knife is better, more practical, concealable, and cheaper than swords. But the good thing to know the mastery of sword is your arms become strong, sword mastery is also useful in Aikido since many of its moves resembles like swordplay.

In conclusion, you can use a gun, but it is more useful if you also now martial arts, sword mastery is just for fun, not practical at all in self defense.

Several years ago I assisted a handicapped (degenerative disease) Assistant District Attorney get good enough with his .380 to pass the test for a Concealed Carry Permit.

He could still walk, but barely and with pain, but he had prosecuted *many* violent criminals.

What martial art would you recommend he study? What art teaches you to fight from a wheel chair against a violent meth head?

Why *should* my wife spend 10 hours a week learning a skill that forces her to touch--and if she's *lucky* get bled on by--a violent felon who may have hepatits or AIDS, and probably get beaten to death or raped anyway?

Guns are not a menace to society, people are. If you were to wave a magic wand and get rid of all guns around the world the only thing that would change would be that those in power would make sure they hired the biggest, strongest and fastest fighters, and the criminals would find it *easier* to prey on weaker people than today.

England completely banned handguns and their violent crime rates have been increasing dramatically ever since.

Australia has done the same and seen similar (but not as dramatic) results.

Canada's ban has had not lead to a drop in crime.

Firearm bans almost never decrease crime.

On the flip side martial arts, including sword work, reward those most physically fit and those who work the hardest--meaning those who enjoy or are good at other things wind up at the mercy of those who excel at physical activity, while I can get anyone to a reasonable level of proficiency in reactive gun fighting with 2-3 afternoons and practicing for 5 minutes 3 times a week, and once a month at the range.

Handguns are *easy* for "basic" self defense. Swords are *hard*. I'd rather a doctor spend his time learning how to cure illnesses as opposed to creating wounds.

Remember when those bullies took your lunch money at school? The rest of your life will be like that.

God made man, Colonel Sam Colt made them equal.

Guns are necessary. Try being dropped in the middle of the wilderness with a sword or martial arts skill. Guess what? You're dead. How about a woman facing a 300 lb. psychopath with the intent of raping and killing her. Would a gun be pointless then? The frontiers have been settled and the enemies have been held back by men with guns. you should be grateful.

just a part of a sportsmans tool box to entertainment of all sorts, and a means of great self defense to all regardsless if you can fight bare handed or not. We need em, and the enemy hates the fact we love em, and are very good at their production, and use.
Many a home victim wished they had a weapon, and many have saved their lives due to one in their possession. Nothing worse than bringing a sword to a gun fight, watch Indiana Jones....
Every legal home should have 1 shotgun loaded with birdshot so as to spare the neighbors in a larger community. Just a thought on how old ladys and gents can have a safer equalizer.

Death note stop being a pansy. Guns are cool, ok?

Guns are just a tool like any other. Consider the 98 lb woman who is attacked in her home by a 210 pound convict just out of the big house. If she has a gun and knows how to use it, she has the ability to "equalize" the situation. Also, consider the benefit of not having to clothe and feed this useless punk at taxpayer expense for the next 10-20 yrs if he kills the poor woman. Problem solved!

If you don't like guns, so be it, don't own one.
However, do not deny those who do.

I would agree that guns are a menace. The ability to cause death and permanent injury with such a small weapon and little to no training is too much power for the inherit bad nature that is within humankind. However, they are not pointless, in modern society not every person has the lifestyle that allows for combat training and so possession of a firearm gives them instant self-defense. For law enforcement officials there is no better way to minimize injuries and casualties as they deal with all types of criminals on a regular basis. Lastly, the sad reality is that guns were invented and there is no known method of rewinding and erasing time so they are here to stay. Even if guns were abolished and outlawed, guess who would have them? That's right the criminals. My personal philosophy about guns is either no one should have them (including police force) or everyone should have them (all adult civilians). As a criminal are you going to rob a bank at gunpoint if it's possible that 9 out of every 10 people in the place have a personal firearm? Not unless you're freakin' crazy, and if you are crazy than you'll die a quick death as you're filled with 15 bullets from all the civilians who shot you 5 seconds after you said, "give me all your money!" I wish guns were never invented and all self defense and war was conducted on a basis of physical skill and ability, but that isn't the case. Additionally, I wish there was a police officer for every 50 people in this country, but sadly there is 1 police officer for something like every 1500 people. What that means is that I can go over to my next door neighbor's house and kill everyone in it, even loudly if I wanted to, and the police could not possibly get there in time to stop me; everyone in the house would be dead and the police would just be playing "clean up." This is what our modern law enforcement team does, they clean up after criminal's messes and try to arrest them AFTER a crime is committed, it is rare that a police officer stops a crime either during or before it is committed. This is why it SHOULD be legal to bear personal firearms at all times. If I am mugged in south LA, guess who has a gun and guess who doesn't. Sometimes the law protects the honest citzen, sometimes it punishes him/her. In the cases of: muggings, robberies, murder, rape, kidnapping, and terrorism it is always the victim who is unarmed because he/she OBEYS the law, and this person's reward for being a good citizen is injury, pain, loss of property, and death. As Americans we should seek justice and freedom, not allowing a person to carry a gun at all times is a restriction of both, and against our constitutional right, but nobody likes to talk about that I guess. Anyways, that is my take on guns.

I like 'em. I own a couple. Nothing more intimidating to a home invader than the sound of a 12 gauge pump racking a shell into the chamber. It really raises the pucker factor to a new level.

Don't bring your sword to a gun fight.

BTW, I train karate and sword too.
