It is impossible to know the differences until you have trained in or seen both arts - I can remember having to make a similar choice between Tae Kwon Do and Karate.

If you are facing a choice between Karate and Kung Fu, then I suggest you go to 4 lessons of each and make your choice. It is not necessarily the art that is important, but the teacher. Talk to the students and decide which teacher you think is best for you.

Both arts are beneficial to the body (if practised correctly).

Kung Fu was invented by chinese monks and features many 'circular' movements, as well as pressure point techniques and styles based around the movements of animals. It was created by people who believe in karma and wanted to minimise the damage done to an attacker, to prevent bad karma coming back to the monk.

Karate was invented by the bodyguards of the king of Okinawa, and was derived from Kung Fu. They didn't care about karma - they needed to kill with one blow. Karate features 'linear' techniques designed to finish a fight with one blow, and to fight many opponents.

With mastery, both martial arts will teach the same techniques, but in a different order and with different emphasis. Karate is normally considered to be more powerful at least in the early stages, as it teaches powerful hitting.--James Copple

As far as i know, karate is a more to the point kind of art, its definately not easy, its more simple and straight forward, I think doing both, it will compliment each other, although I never tryed kung fu, full contact karate is something all people should give a go

Karate is easier in some ways than Kung-fu. Kung-fu requires much more athleticism which is something that not everyone has an abundance of and it is much harder for older students to start off with than some other martial arts. It also takes more time to develop those skills so that they can be used for self-defense in a street situation.

There are many styles of Karate and many styles of Kung Fu that are indistinguishable from one another. This is because the word Karate in it's original Okinawan, means "Chinese Hand," which is what Okinawans call Kung Fu, particularly from the Fukien Province, (Southern Shaolin Temple) which had strong trade relations with Okinawa.

Kung fu:
Alludes to any individual accomplishment or cultivated skill, chinese martial arts training consists of the following components: basics, forms, applications and weapons. Each style has its own unique training system with varying emphasis on each of those components . In addition, philosophy, ethics and even medical practise are highly regarded by most Chinese martial arts. A complete training system should also provide insight into Chinese attitudes and culture.

Karate:
It is known primarily as a striking art, featuring punching, kicking, knee/elbow strikes, and open-handed techniques, but grappling, joint manipulations, locks, restraints/traps, throws, and vital point striking also appear.

It is my humble opinion that Kung Fu is simply a better style of fighting than Karate.

Kung Fu and Jiu-Jitsu are both about equal in terms of effectiveness and deadliness in street fight situations.

kung fu is really for people with patience because you got to learn alot of brain exercising if you go to real kung fu classes.
But karate is my favorite because it involves less talking and more action =)

They both have their good and bad qualities. Neither is better, especially when you lump all branches of both types of fighting. The way to be the best in either, or both, is to become the best and be able to adapt at a moment's notice to whomever you come across. There in lies the fact that it's all about a figher, not the particular system.
