OK I fight MMA. The problem is that I've done traditional martial arts my whole life. I have defended myself on a couple of occasions but now I have the whole mind set to not throw the first punch. is there any way out of this or should I just do like I did in my first fight and wait until he throws then counter. I know I hit hard so I'd like to hit him first but I can't seem to shake this mind set. your oppinions are apreciated

This isn't a real fight, I know, I've fought in the cage myself. But it is as close as your going to get without being in a real street fight. Traditional martial arts has beat it into your head not to "start" a fight, fine don't then you'll just have to go around taking the first strike. One day you'll realize that just maybe, throwing the fist punch isn't starting it, your just finishing it quicker. The person infront of you has "started" the fight by stepping in the ring with you, Think about it that way. ??? A punch dosen't need to be thrown to be attacked. A persons intent to do harm is an offensive attack upon you, and believe me stepping into the cage is an offensive attack upon you. To have this mind set in a real life street fight could get you killed. I won't start a conflict with another person but if it get physical I have no issue with ending the fight as quickly as possible, and if that means defending myself against their intent to do me harm then I will. If that means being offensive first, well maybe that will save both of us pain and injury. Again, I never hurt anyone anyway, they hurt themselves by attacking me. I only correct their ill intent of doing harm, by showing them the error in their ways.

Not an odd question at all. I know the feeling. Being in a Traditional setting, with bowing, and mediation, and kata, is a blast, and very important for a well-rounded Artist. But it can be tough when switching to MMA, which is really more of a sport then anything else. It's very "jock" like. Getting out of the Warrior-poet mindset of Traditional Martial arts and in the "Killer" fighting mode of a combat sportsman can be tough for people who haven't had much in the way of aggressive , sports-focused training.

My best advice, the thing that helped me, and just DOING IT! Practice! Get into a MMA and/or boxing gym, and spar, spar, spar. The only way the are going to develop these skills you need to make it in the ring is to spend time fighting in the ring.

Remimber, when doing MMA, you're more of an athlete then a Martial Artist. You have to learn to think and train more like a sportsman.

Not an odd question really. I think some answers didn't understand that you are asking about an MMA (mixed martial arts) competition, not attacking someone on the street.

I like to strike first. It isn't always there though. If you can close range without exposing yourself I think it is a good tactic. Even if you can't get close enough for a punch, consider a leg or body kick before your opponent gets warmed up. Pull back to your guarded position quickly though as the counter is probably going to come. Maybe drill on striking quickly then circling out.

You need to change your attitude and mind set if you want to be a good fighter and get past that. Some fighters do this by just getting crazy and thinking mean nasty things about their opponent that they don't like. Most fighters though take a competition and workman approach to it. They are there to fight and win and so that is what they are going to try and do and they oftentimes don't feel any real animosity towards most of their opponents. Some fighters are slow starters and it takes them getting hit once or twice before they start to get in the fighting mode. Unfortuantely if the other fighter jumps on you early you may not survive long enough to get into that fighting mode. One of the things I would do with some of my fighters just before we would walk out of the dressing room would be to give them a sharp slap on the cheek. This would make them extra alert, get them out of their happy, everything is fine mood, help put them just a little bit better into that serious fighting mode. As they gained in experience that would be required less and I actually had one of them ready and waiting for it as a joke with a mouth full of water which I was quickly wearing on the front of my jacket and he said, "I don't think I need that anymore coach". From then on he didn't and his workman approach, experience, and desire to win was enough but it shows how a fighter can joke one minute and the next be in the proper mindset to fight.

If you want to learn to throw the first punch. Add aditional mentality. If someone can kill you with one shot, then you wouldn't be apt t let them get the first one in. Set that mind frame and attack. Even in traditional martial arts never throwing the first punch can be a weakness.

not throwing the first punch doesnt make much of a difference if your prepared for their attack, infact it could benifit you, as long as you fight afterwards

If you mean that your probelm is that your not agressive enough, then you really need to be and practice being agressive in training. A good thing is to find someone who is agressive to spar with you, then you wont feel as bad being agressive back

Apart from that, i guess its just an attitude thing that you realize with time, sometimes its good to hold back and other times you have to fight, if you want to win you just think about that, just knowing should be enough to change your attitude, maby people telling you this is also important, so here we are, be agressive when the situation requires is!

Just keep walkin around circles and see if he try to swing when you think he might swing punch him. All that time you are keeping your guard up so you won't get hit in the face. Remember don't hit above the neck and below the belt.
