First, I will admit my bias - I can't stand the DH.

But I will be open minded in reviewing answers to my question. Should guys who are DH for most of their career (E. Martinez, Baines, F. Thomas, Ortiz) have their offensive numbers be held to a higher standard when considered for the HOF. Remember, these guys do not play or contribute to half of the game. Also, out of the five "tools" they are minus in two categories (defense and arm) and are usually poor in a third (base running).

I am NOT saying a long-time DH should not make the Hall, but I do think they must be held to a higher standard - even at the expense of traditional benchmarks like 3,000 hits and 500 home runs.

ANd I am NOT talking about a Mike Piazza who finishes his career as a DH.

And who monitors if they are even touching the rubber? Think they can get away with it? I think none of the umpires can see if from where they are standing.

A-Rod is murdering the ball, I admit. But look at these other guys who just aren't putting up the long ball as frequently this year...

David Ortiz--18 HR
Manny Ramirez--19 HR
Albert Pujols--24 HR
Travis Hafner--16 HR
Vernon Wells--Not sure, but not many...
Jim Thome--In the teens
Paul Konerko--about 20 or so
Jason Bay--In the teens
Andrew Jones--Lower than normal
Chipper Jones--Lower than normal
Nomar Garciaparra--4 HR
Bobby Abreu--11 HR

Some guys like Fielder and Howard are clobbering the ball, but it seems like so many guys are just way down this year. Guys that routinely hit 40+ are going to end up in the 20's.

Steroids? Looser woven ball???

The Twins are only 4.5 games back in the Central, 4 games back in the Wild Card. Both the Indians and the Tigers are slumping a little and the Twins have 1 more game against Cleveland tonight which could narrow the deficit to 3.5 games, plus after that they go to Kansas City for 3 games. WHY DOES EVERYONE SEEM TO ALWAYS COUNT THE TWINS OUT?? mlb

If Barry Bonds can hit more homers with steroids, couldn't Babe Ruth have hit more homers if he didn't drink as much as he did (performance decreasing activity)?

I think Babe Ruth should be creditied with 100 more homers to compensate while Bonds should lose 100 homers.

Okay, so baseball fans outside the San Francisco Bay Area seem to hate Barry Bonds for many reasons. What OTHER players do you love to boo for? Players from rival teams? Players who say dumb things in interviews? Name some names... and let's not get too nasty with the comments!

The rulebooks clearly state the strike zone limits, but many umpires neglect this in favor their own little zone. I'm just wondering why this doesn't bother fans more, and why anyone except Sandy Alderson seems to care in the MLB offices.

I can't imagine umpires arbitrarily calling balls fair or foul, or runners safe or out, so why an arbitrary strike zone? I know you can argue that fair/foul and safe/out are more clearly defined, but the strike zone too is quite clearly defined in the rules.

So why isn't this more of an issue?

I mean, for someone who broke what people are calling "greatest individual record in American sports," he seems to always get marginalized by Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle, Barry Bonds, etc. I'm wondering why he never seems to match these guys. Statistics welcome, so long as they're relevant and accurate.
