I don't think he ever tested positive during the season. Coke is not a performance enhancing drug - it is addictive and cripples an athletes body much worse than steroids. The side effects of cocaine use for performance enhancements could even lead to a fatal overdose. Have you ever actually seen a coke addict? Same can be said for speed - its first use was during WWII - the Nazi army used them. At first speed enhanced their performance but the addiction and side effects soon withered away the effectiveness of their men.
Steroids are a similar but significantly different drug.

Ha! So did Lawrence Taylor.

Cocaine is not like steroids, not at all. I would say that speed in general would be performance enhancing, but steroids are different. I say put him in anyway. Peter Gammons said it best. It's about the various eras and Bonds is the best player of the steroid era. That and I feel that emphasis should be put on the word "Fame." He is so polarizing, so FAMOUS that you have to put him in. Baseball's hall of fame is silly. You have a hall of fame without the all time hits leader. Silly.

Also, should be noted, the NFL hall has different standards that the one for baseball. There is far more importance on morality with baseball.

A.) His name is Michael IRVIN
B.) He did his time for the Coke use.
C.) I am SURE there are coke users in the baseball hall of fame.
D.) ANY drug can be a performance enhancer. Just look at Dock Ellis. He threw a NO-HITTER while tripping on acid. Technically, an aspirin is a performance enhancer.

When Michael was playing there was no testing program in place like the NFL has now. The incident you are referring to happened in the off-season and unrelated to any testing conducted by the NFL. Officially, no NFL rules were broken by Michael or any MLB rules by Bonds. When Bonds comes up for nomination to the HOF I believe he goes in on first ballot.

It is. Just ask Keith Hernandez, or Tim Raines, or a lot of other guys who played in the '80s. Gives you a major boost of energy.
Irvin and his HOF speech have one thing in common--they are incredibly full of ****. If the football HoF banned guys for drugs, the joint would almost be empty. . . .

And Eric Clapton used cocaine and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. What's up with that?

The NFL are more easy going with their HOF selections. If a player did well on the field, nothing else really matters.

Different sports have different standards. Baseball has a clause about being a good citizen and obeying laws as well as baseball performance. Football allows anyone in...Lawrence Taylor is another prime example of them letting anyone in!
