Edit: Apparently the teams listed were not ranked, just listed to give us options. The list then was in no particular order.
Anyway here is the list:

1) Red Sox - best record in baseball, and got better with Gagne.

2) Angels - Are the wheels going to fall off? No one suitable bats behind Vlad, with an injury to their fragile pitching staff they would surely fall out of the AL West.

3) Yankees - hottest team in baseball now, 18-7 since the all star break. Lots of home games and an easy schedule sure are part of it - but with the amount of runs they have scored they are starting to look unstoppable. Pitching will determine how far they get.

4) Mariners - hot right now, perhaps the surprise of the season. As long as the pitching holds on they will be in prime contention to take the wild card.

5) Tigers - 1-9 in the past ten. Sure, but they will bust out of this slump.

6) Indians - also slumping but they will come around

7) Mets - Best the NL has to offer. If Pedro comes back moderately well then they will be the team to beat there.

8) Twins - the last of the AL powerhouses and they have struggles this season. Still with a good rest of August and September they could leap into the Wild Card or Central lead.

9) Cubs - what a turn around, what role will Kerry Woods play?

10) D-backs: who needs runs when you have pitching. How will their vets hold up later in the season?

11) Phillies - a great mix of veterans and young stars. will they surge to the playoffs or end up one game out again?

12) Padres - no runs all pitching

13) Braves - can they take the AL east?

14) Rockies

15) Dodgers

further edit: A suggestion - perhaps the 6 division leaders should be given a free pass?
