I just picked this book up for my history class, and as one of my first books tackling religious debate, it's pretty interesting so far. The thing that surprised me is his lack of opinion and personal views. Dawkins, for example, often uses the tactic of stating what Christians believe, then telling them why what they believe is ridiculous, which gets nobody anywhere. This book (so far) just gives the facts. It does exactly what it says it will - unearth the Bible.

Whenever I bring up books like this, I never get a Christian view of things. If I ask why they don't want to read it, it's usually because they have no interest in hearing somebody else's subjective opinion. It's not that they're close-minded, just that there's no arguing with faith - and that's understandable.

But this book isn't out to debunk, just inform. And nothing bothers me more than religious people who know nothing of their history. Thoughts? Can you actually believe in things like the Exodus after reading this?

I heard that God actually RECREATED Earth in Genesis and God actually took the dinosaur bones out of the old earth and buried them in the new earth he just created. After of course he must've created humans and all other life. Is that true? Or did God speed up the half-life of radiometric isotopes in fossils?

Can anyone please help me understand?

This is the definition of free will according to Merriam Webster's dictionary.
http://mw1.merriam-webster.com/dictionary

1 : voluntary choice or decision
2 : freedom of humans to make choices that are not determined by prior causes or by *DIVINE INTERVENTION*

How is it that a supreme authority (God) who punishes you for not doing what he says free will?

If you choose not to obey God because your afraid of hell how is that free will?

Free will means freedom from choice to make my own choices just as the definition says so. So if I believe in no God, why am I pressured by it's followers to believe in God? That's contradictory to free will. Why do so many Christians misunderstand the definition of free will and replace it with the meaning of choice?

I want to believe in a highe power but we have so many different denominations all telling me different versions of what to interpret. " No you don't have to be baptized" or "yes but in the name of the father, the son and the holy spirit" while others believe the preacher should say "in Jesus name". Then there's the fact that some words can not be accurately translated from Greek, Hebrew to English or whatever. So how do you expect us sinners to know what to believe. Add to this the unlikelihood of people "walking on water", "changing water into wine", and being risen from the dead. I am serious Christians I do want to believe but I have trouble getting past some of this. Just pray for me.

Also, can you please explain why you feel Christians don't understand the bible, when Muslims have sheiks who interpret one way or another using differing hadith some of which are supposed to be more reliable than others. From what I have seen there is just as much confusion regarding the religion of Islam as Christianity.

What if your religion were the same thing that it currently is, minus the afterlife part? (Don't give me, "It wouldn't be the same thing, now would it?) I mean if everything besides the afterlife part remained intact, would you still be part of it?
Would you switch over to one of the other religions that also offers an afterlife?
Is the promise of an afterlife the main draw in religions?

I'm really a pagan. But I think I should let her know slowly. Do you think I should say I'm a agnostic first and then wait a few years then tell her I'm a pagan? I can't keep pretending to be a Christian. I'm good at it but I'm about to burst when I get asked questions about what jesus does and etc etc and have to do bible verses. I just want to shout "I DON'T BELIEVE IN THIS!" Please help me!
