After reading the answers to my other questions, I'm getting the feeling that non-Christians need for the truth to be flexible to accomodate whatever they believe.

Maybe I should ask:

Is truth universal, or is it flexible?

hypothetically speaking if someone herd gods voice and telling them to kill their family and they choose not to do it because it was wrong would they be wrongfor not doing what god has asked. And what about the people who have killed people because god told them to they are now in prison or mental hospitals are they insane or not how can you realy know that god didnt realy tell them too if they are insane for beleiving voices coming from god why is it acceptable to hear posative voices and not negative ones.

I've challenged Christians on their view of faith, now it's the non-Christians' turn:

One person offered an alternative definition: faith is a belief that is not based on proof. ie: no truth involved.

Notice the subtle twist at the end. Webster's definition does NOT say that there is no truth involved, it says that the belief has not yet been proven. A good example would be Michael J. Fox who seems to have faith in stem cell research, a medical remedy not yet proven.

Is it honest to say "no truth involved"?

I've seen Christians here try to say that their faith comes BEFORE truth.

Don't they read scripture? Paul wrote that if Christ (in truth) is not risen, let us eat drink and be merry! What's the difference? Tomorrow we die, and that ends everything!

Didn't the Bereans research the truth of Paul's claims before believing?

Do you think this is why so many atheists ridicule us?

If our faith is not rooted in the truth, aren't we sitting ducks for whatever Jim Jones comes along and makes us feel good?

I'm an atheist or maybe more agnostic than I know. So if an Antichrist really rises, what will you do when it comes time for the mark of the beast. Will you take it or not? You realize that if you don't, not only are you not going to be able to buy anything but most likely you will be killed on sight. Also I have a second question: Who do you think the Antichrist will be? Bush is not an option. He's not stout enough. The Antichrist from what I understand will be a stout man or strong-looking man with a great voice that will gain him many allies. Also I think he supposed to been born in Austria. Don't know that part for sure.

4He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.

5After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.

6Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?

7Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.

8Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

9Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

10Jesus saith to him, He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all.

11For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean.

Religions make all sorts of claims that can be considered scientific, that is, things that are testable. Some examples are as follows:

Man, earth, animals... everything was created by god.

Prayer can heal the sick.

God can perform miracles.

God acts in our daily lives.

And many more...

All of these claims can be tested to see weather or not they are part of reality or merely assumptions, and guesses.

One of these has been studied quite heavily. Prayer's effect on people who are ill was tested recently and it was shown that prayer has no effect at all on patients undergoing surgery. In fact, those who knew that they were being prayed for had more complications than the control groups. It shows quite clearly that prayer has no supernatural effect.

The others can be tested as well... and for thousands of years the god hypothesis has existed... but has never exceeded hypothesis status.

Someone asked us to choose between faith and truth, and this is the answer I gave:

"Truth and faith are almost the same thing.

One is the substance, the other is the action. They're basically inseperable."

Let's try Webster, and see what he has to say about faith:

"Confidence or trust in a person or thing: faith in another's ability."

How do you have faith in another's ability without seeing what they can do (learning the truth of their ability)?

For those of you Christians who disagree, how strong is your faith when you find out the truth compels you to abandon what you believe?

For those of you non-Christians who disagree, how can you define a faith you don't practice?

I'd be interested in knowing what everyone else thinks. What kind of faith is worth having where facts are not involved?
