One universal energy, one "God" that is everything and nothing, including you and me?

friends here will get to read it. I just got a call that a friend of mine who was battling cancer for many years and losing the battle has shot himself in the head. He leaves behind two beautiful teenaged daughters. Please send out a prayer for them to be comforted during what is likely to be the most traumatic holiday season of their lives. If you are not a Christian, as many of my friends here are not, please simply spare them a passing thought at the very least. He was the father of my daughters stepsisters and a very good man. He will be greatly missed. Thank you in advance for your tolerance and for all who will spare their moment for this purpose.

Over the past couple of years I've become dissatisified with the Christian religion. Don't get me wrong, I love the teachings of Jesus (forgiveness and love for others, turning the other cheek, not judging) and I love the view he paints of God (our loving, just, heavenly father). But I don't agree with most of the churches teachings reguarding angels, demons, the trinity, heaven and hell, original sin, substitutional atonement, and divine biblical inerrancy. After learning about what my religion teaches, and after years of vainly trying to reconcile my conflicting beliefs, I've decided to find a new one. The problem is that my mom is a very devout Christian and my parents raised me to be a Christian myself. She's always telling me that I need to go to church more, and when I told her why I disliked certain parts of the Christian religion she hinted that I might be heading down the wrong road in life. How do I convince her that I can be a non christian and still be a good person?

I was wondering if anyone knew what the thoughts on this was. I've been sudying the holocaust in a class, and someone brought that up. Asked about it. I have to admit, I don't know, and I was really curious about how the religion views it.

Thanks!

"Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes." Haggai 1:6

I say that she is. The Harry Potter books are very spiritual. They have a hidden message of the Gospel. You have to look beyond the surface of the story. I think that she is converting the minds and hearts of children and adults the world over. In their hearts they are following the teaching of Dumbledore which are the teaching of Christ.

When you think of 'evangelical fundamentalism' you probably have a mental picture of someone who embodies that approach to Christianity. Other than their theological beliefs, provide a charactorization that fits your mental image.

I don't happen to believe in this God character. TO ME, it is a simplistic and primitive answer to questions people weren't able to answer and it endures because people want to believe they are special and have no responsibility to the planet or the other creatures that live here.

QUESTION: Why should I worry that this God will punnish me (assuming he exists) just because I used the brain (and the evidence) he gave me?

I mean, this is what it has come to. I feel there are a lot of children on here who answer questions (and ask) that are not experienced enough to answer. I see real questions about Christianity and other forms of religion and they get bashed by people of the other religions. Out of the religions I am most familar with, Christians, Muslims, Hindu and others, I cannot think of anywhere in any one of those where it is ok to bash and criticize other people. Most religions I know of teach love and understanding.

You will not convert anyone here. It is ok to respond to someones question using the experience of your religion. Yahoo answers will never be a pulpit.
