As an atheist, I hear all the time from some, not all, christians that "what harm would come if you believed, if you are wrong you get heaven if you are right nothing happens." Pascals Wager.

Pascal's Wager asks an atheist to compromise their belief.

How many people asking that of an atheist would be willing to put the shoe on the other foot and themselves give 'lip service' to a belief they didn't truly believe in?

And is it really ethical for any person to ask for such compromise?

His mom is verbally abusive and they are completely incompatible. What could God be trying to show him or teach him through this time in his life?

Why is it so terrible to believe that Jesus may have been married? The Bible talks about marriage and family, yet the Catholic Religion is the only religion that doesn't allow it's priests to marry or have families. Isn't that hypocritical in itself? God WANTED man to be happy and have marriage and family. Why are priests denied what God wanted for all humans? And why couldn't Jesus have those same needs and wants on Earth? It's not a sin to love and marry. I don't get it!

My question is this: creationists take the story of the bible literally and believe that the world was created by God in seven days; why therefore do they refuse to treat the rest of the bible in the same literal manner? For example, one of the ten commandments - 'thou shalt not kill': take this literally, and you should end up with a Bhuddist type belief that all life is precious and not to be wasted. As far as I know, creationists are usually also supporters of having guns etc, and go hunting and shooting (which is killing, is it not? God said thou shalt not kill, and as far as I know didn't qualify this with, 'but hey, you think hunting and killing is fun, so off you go and kill some deer') and probably wouldn't hesitate to shoot a burglar as seems to happen fairly frequently in the US, or so we are led to believe.

How can they justify these double standards??

In my last question I tried to show that Jesus is to blame for most of our problems, and only two people told me I was wrong.

Is this all the help Jesus can get any more?

I started questioning faith when I learned that Santa Clause was not real. I was about 8 years old and found my dad setting up presents on christmas eve, when I was supposed to be sleeping. This rattled my sense of everything and began to question my religion for the next few years. I began to realize, that every question that I would ask of my mom, priest, or catechism teacher, would end up leading to the same ultimate answer. You should "just believe". That was not good enough for me, and I told my mom that I did not believe in god when I was 12. She replied by slapping me in the face. I didn't hear the word "atheist" until I was about 14. When I looked it up I realized that's what I am. I'm 32 now and I still like to tease my mom about the time she slapped me. She still wants me to "just believe".

I'm curious to know other atheists experiences, since I only know one other person who is an atheist.

How did you first realize that you didn't "just believe"?
How did your family react?

Im new to the concept of God, i didnt believe in Him before. When i pray, i dont know how to call him. Because when hearing/saying "God" i can see an old man with white beard who looks like man. But thats not what i believe he is! I believe that its a spiritual being without gender, omnipotent, present everywhere and that "it" created universal energy that i use for healing. Do you have some suggestions concerning how should i call it in my prayers? Id like to give it some name and not just "higher power" in order to gain better relationship with it. But dont you think its rude to look for name for it just like i would like to name my pet? wont it be angry because i do that? I know its a weird question :-) please dont tell me to call him Jesus or something similar. Thanks!
