If there was no future...life would be so meaningless. We live in our present, use our present, work in our present only to make our future more meaningful, only to make our future better.

We do "live" in the present, but part of living is planning for what you will do next... tomorrow, and next week, and next year, etc.
The problems arise when you become preoccupied with yet to unfold happenings that you can't predict or control. There's nothing wrong with *preparing* for the future, so long as it doesn't paralyze you in the here and now. Note that this problem isn't confined to dwelling on the future. Plenty of people, in fact most people, get "trapped in the past" - victims of things they are unable to "get beyond", and thus only grow to a certain level emotionally, and not much further.
Healthy people focus on the present so they are effective at whatever it is they are doing, reflect on the past to learn from their experiences, and plan for the future so they can be prepared for whatever happens.
You need to strike a balance between the three in order to live a happy life.

Because the future is coming like a speeding freight train. If I lived in the present I couldn't get out of the way fast enough.

If you study psychology, you'll find that there are three things people need in order to be happy:
1) Something to do.
2) Someone to love.
3) Something to look forward to.
The third thing is why people look in to the future. It makes them happy. It gives them something to look forward to. And thinking about the future makes is exciting.
When look forward to future events, you can let your imagination go wild. For example, a lot of people think about winning the lotter even if they don't play it. They think of what they would do and what life would be like if they never again had to worry about money. Thinking about that makes you feel good and takes you away from current problems or lack of action in your life.

It takes time for us to form thoughts and process events in our minds. Because the "present" is only a terribly fleeting moment and quickly becomes the past, we can NEVER truly live "in the moment". There's not time. By the time you think of THIS moment, it's already THIS OTHER moment, and so on forever. So it's much more comfortable to look either forward or back.

the truth behind our life-
every moment in life has an expectation for the future.
u live today thinking that u will live tomorrow also.
if u dont have any tomorrows - future, you ll not be able to live today - present.
that is why, even we live today - the present, we keep planning for tomorrow - the future.
and, the future takes over the present.

it's worse than that. all we can percieve is the past.
all our everyday activities are based on what's happened in the past.
we suddenly have a thought.
that thought occurred in the past at the subconcious level.
we decide to do this or that.
the decision was in the past.
the root of the decision was in the remote subconsious past.
everything we know is past.
we cannot know now.
by the time we know , the process that brought it to the concious mind is past.
we cannot know future. we can only have an idea of what it will bring based on what has occurred in similar situations in the past.
we, as biological entities, are incapable of knowing the present or the future.
we truely think in the past.
