China has become a huge economic force and is getting more powerful everyday. Surely it makes at least economic sense to learn their language and keep up.

I am always appalled here when someone asks for a translation and most of the answerers provide translations generated with automatic translators like babelfish, freetranslation and so on. In the languages I know I can immediately see that these answers are always totally scrambled, nonsensical and absurd. Don't the people check their answers, do they even know the language which is asked for? Do they really believe these software translations are anywhere near natural language?

There is a rather easy way you could check the validity of a translation. You can make the software translator first translate in the desired direction, and then take the result and let the same software translator translate it back to the original language! If the translation would really work you should get back your original text, shouldn't you? Have you ever tried that?

Do you use software translators for serious purposes, like writing letters, texts for school or university, or business?

I read the passage below* on the net, and I'm still rather confused. Reason being, does someone speaking British English (BrE) have a British 'accent' or would it be referred to as a British 'dialect'?

* "A dialect is usually spoken by people who live in a certain region of a country. Those people speak their mother tongue in their own individual way. For example, many Scottish people have a dialect.
An accent usually describes the way people pronounce words of a language that is different from their mother tongue. For example, Arnold Schwarzenegger speaks English with an Austrian accent."

Okay, so what I've gathered from this passage is that a person raised in Britain would be speaking their mother tongue, so the 'accent' we perceive here in the United Stated should not be referred to as such--it should therefore be referred to as a British 'dialect' instead. Is this right?

Okay,

Well after a trip to Barcelona, ive fallen in love with spanish and decided to learn it.

I am currently using the pimsleur programme which is fantastic, however due to the fact that english currenlty is my only language my rate of picking up and understanding spanish is slow.

I would appreciate any tips, stratergies or advice for learning spanish more effectively.

I have a friend that is Mexican and one that is Puerto Rican too and every time someone gets hurt like they stub their toe or they cut themselves or something they say this little rhyme in Spanish. The only two words I could pick up were sanaras manana and knowing my Spanish skills they probably aren't even in the rhyme. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about? And if you do can you please give me what it is in Spanish and a translation? Thanks in advance.
