This summer I have to volunteer at a nonprofit as a condition of a scholarship I received. I don't have a lot of money to do this on, though, so the ideal thing would be if I could work for an organization that would provide me room and board while I was working for them.

Does anyone know of any organizations or websites that list organizations that provide room and board to volunteers? I'm interested in both US and international sites.

I want to donate a toy to a child that has illness and was wondering who to donate to, I looked at the St. Jude website and it appears that they only take monetary donations for the research hospital. Just recently lost someone to cancer and want to make a difference to a child in need.

I saw that Kay Jewelers was selling this cute plush stuffed animal set for charity and profits go to St.Jude. I wanted to get a few for some kids this Christmas and help give to Charity at the same time.... but when I went to check out (on their website) it said that I could only purchase 1 charity item per order and then that I couldn't even purchase the charity item unless I also bought something from Kay Jewelers. This doesn't sound like they are out to help St. Jude's to me. Their profit from any sale would far out way the profit going to St. Jude's and it only allows their purchasing customers to contribute in this way. Also, not all money from the sale is going to St. Jude... only the profit amount. So it's not like they are out any money from only selling the item with no sale.

Does anyone else think this is wrong?

I want to travel abroad and gain cultural knowledge from other countries, but the peace corps has almost a 2 year commitment to join, I was wondering if anyone knew of any programs that will allow me to travel abroad.

PS: I would like the program to have something to do with helping people in other countries, because that's what inspired me to want to join the peace corps..

Has anyone had experience working in assisted living? did you like it.. yes/ no...and why?
I have worked in restaurants for years and understand that culture. Now i have been offered a job as the food & beverage director at an assisted living community that has 85 residents. 20% of which have alzheimers. i'm not concerned about the job description - i know how to run kitchens, staff, and service. My issue is going to the relatively unkown of the "old folks" culture.
given my 10 years in coorporate upscale fast paced restaurants... will i survive in loony land?

There are many volunteer programs out there that I really want to join in but they require fees which I can not afford. What about cultural exchange programs? I don't need a salary or whatever, just food allowance to get buy in the country I'll be volunteering in. I prefer to volunteer in third world countries since I come from one. I know UN has a volunteer program but I'm below 25 so I don't qualify.

Can anybody share some info?

My Husband and I don't have any plans for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, so we thought it would be nice to volunteer somewhere. I've called a few places I know of, but no one needs help - How can I find more volunteer opportunities? (Shelters, food banks, etc.). We're in the Chicagoland area.
