There are always reasons not to give to the needy. Many of them are not reasons, but excuses.
If a person has made bad decisions, (and even if they continue to make them,) does that mean they should freeze? Does your charity include the right to tell people how to live their lives?
When God judges you for not giving a coat, will he agree that your excuse was good enough?

There are no easy answers. I wish there were.

This is something great that should be done all the time. Whoever said u need dope to survive must be on it themselves or something cuz that's the dumbest thing I ever heard. Anyways though, wish the rest of the world could be as nice and help out the people in this world who truly need help instead of waisting money on dumb crap. Thank you for posting this. It's always great to hear some good being done especially around the holidays. Everyone have a Merry Christmas, Quanza. Hanukkah, and any other holidays I missed and a Happy New year. God Bless

The companies that so generously supply coats to homeless people IS doing something to help these people! Nothing is perfect and it never will be Grand pa. It's like dropping $1.00 in a homeless persons hat. You give it with your heart and hope they spend it on food or whatever they need for a day in the streets. What they do with it after you've shown your generosity is up to them. We don't know these people except to say they are our brothers and sisters. We cannot stop giving because some will abuse it. We can only hope and pray they don't!

obviously not all homeless people do that. it's the common misconception that the homeless are drug addicts. it defies me how people love to keep this cruel myth strong, and how they love to judge many for the sins of the few.

a company that will give people the chance for an easier life is def a kind one. people should always be given the chance, and trusted to do the right thing. otherwise this will be a cold world for everyone.

and as far as the very few selling their coats for drugs, ok first off, it's bloody cold out! well below freezing. they'll find something else to sell, if they need to. and that's another thing, addiction is clearly a monster you have never faced before. i am not defending the addicted (who knows who put them there, themselves or someone else), but they will find a way to get what they need. the agony of going without is a pretty strong motivator.

i'm sure we're all happy for you for being able to pay your bills. but i'm disgusted at your prejudice towards the poor, honestly. it's the rich that find such disdain so easy. you've never felt it, so you think you know. and someone who has felt the fear and anxiety of eviction and poverty would never make such a comment as yours.

I'm not going to judge who should freeze to death and who needs a warm coat. I think it is a great idea. If the comunity donated enough coats then the company wouldn't have to donate any. Plus, I think that everyone deserves something clean and new.

You have scammers in all walks of life, rich and poor. Yeah, it frosts my cake too, that people exploit the generosity of others. But how do you distinguish the needy from the get-overs. I wish I knew.

I've been hungry, broke, cold with no heat in my apartment, had maybe 2 changes of clothing to my name, no hot water, excetera..

God bless the organizations that help the less fortunate. Bravo for them.

Don't worry on the exploiters. Their luck will last just so far. Ever heard of Murphy's Law?

So sad that this is really happening! We have to think of the people who really needed the coats, not the scammers! Just recently the Jaycees in our area took some of the needy kids to the mall & gave them vouchers to buy presents for their family members. Two of those kids had cell phone, pagers & $200 shoes and one had a name brand down filled coat! We can't dwell on this as we have to think that the majority really do need our help!

Nobody needs dope to survive. That is very noble of that business to do that. Pity the ones selling them for dope can't see this.

That's a tough one. As long as people are getting charity, there are always going to be a few people that exploit what they get. My opinion is that we should give without worrying about what the recipients are going to do with what they've been given, because that ultimately leads to giving only to people that we think are "deserving." We can't let the ones misusing charity prevent us from helping those that desperately need help.

Years ago I had an uncle who worked for Katz, now Osco, they gave poor black kids shoes. The kids would show up at the store a couple of days later saying they lost them. You can not help someone who don't want help, either by education or drugs. The children were taught from birth that the whites would give them things, this was Memphis.
