There are LOTS of great organizations to get you started.

Many charities have local chapters all over the United States.

Some good, reputable organizations to help animals and people are:

Big Brothers, Big Sisters: An Organization that teams children in need of a mentor with a mentor.

Boys and Girls Club: Youth centers where boys and girls can go to recreate in a safe environment.

The SPCA helps lost and abandoned animals, as well as those in need of emergency help.

If these don't seem to fit the bill, consider joining a service club like Rotary International, which finds good causes locally, nationally, and internationally to contribute to and volunteer with.

Best of luck, and thanks for caring about others!

Kudos to you - a life of service is a life well lived and helps you appreciate the good things you receive yourself.
Call the Salvation ARmy and ask about helping serve meals to homeless people at Christmas, Thanksgiving.

call your local Boys and Girls clubs, and ask about their volunteer program.

look in your local newspaper for Community Services groups and needs and see what interests you.

contact your local Rotary Club and ask about being a part of Rotary Teens. They do all sorts of things.

Ditto for Habitat for Humanity. Look up Americore on their website and look at the teen programs they have. Be sure you are keeping track of all volunteer work you do - keep a log of dates, places, times, what you did and how, what you think you contributed and how it affected you. Get a supervisor to sign something saying you did the volunteer work. This all comes in handy for a "resume" and also for verification that you have done your community service work usually required to get your diploma...

VolunteerMatch (http://www.volunteermatch.org), Idealist (http://www.idealist.org) and CraigsList (http://www.craigslist.com) all list volunteering opportunities with thousands of organizations, many of them in your area. There's also this government sponsored site (http://volunteer.gov/gov/) which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc. Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site (http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/).

Check around with your friends and colleagues. You can also check volunteermatch.com for opportunities in your area. If you are part of a church, you might be able to find some leads that way.

Thanks for making the world a better place :)
