Has anyone had experience working in assisted living? did you like it.. yes/ no...and why?
I have worked in restaurants for years and understand that culture. Now i have been offered a job as the food & beverage director at an assisted living community that has 85 residents. 20% of which have alzheimers. i'm not concerned about the job description - i know how to run kitchens, staff, and service. My issue is going to the relatively unkown of the "old folks" culture.
given my 10 years in coorporate upscale fast paced restaurants... will i survive in loony land?

You will love it if you *want* to love it. You will hate it if you *want* to hate it.

Anyone I've known who worked or volunteered in an assisted living center or retirement home loved the clients. If they disliked anything, it was the culture of the staff and the bureaucracy, two things that can be good or bad in *any* environment/business/whatever.

I love elders. They are hilarious, they have great stories, they teach me important things, and they have seen it ALL!

Hon, I don't think this would be a good job for you. You need a certain attitude and want to help people not denigrate them. Remember, these people were productive citizens, worked their whole lives, raised families and something happened to their brains and nothing can be done to reverse it. Would you like your parents to have people taking care of them with the attitude you are presenting?

This job will really be one of the heart. I think you could make some great connections and have a great time if you are open to it. These people really need folks who CARE working around them.
