Why are religions so fear-based?

There's like a version of hell for almost every single religion:

Has anyone seen the latest evidence that petrified trees from the S.t. Helens eruption were thought to be petrified for hundreds of years going by their previous theory? Not starting a debate. Just thought it was curious.

Despite the colorfull title this is a serious question and i would appreciate a serious answer. Thanks!

I have always felt a closness to Wicca, it has cought my attention for the past 4 years, and no matter where i go on a spiritual journey i always come back to it.
Wicca is 'My' religion.
But Why does Wicca not feel right for me???

Every religion Has it's own "Feel" and wicca just doesn't seem to feel right. But i have such a connection.... I don't understand it.

What should i do? I'm tired of searching for a religion (this can't be a life long thing!)

I've heard about William the Conqueror's invasion bringing the then-current French language to Britain, but what about the fact that the Romans occupied Britain? In other words, what percent of the Latin in English came from the occupation of Rome, and what percent came from the Norman conquest?

I'm a non-native. I have a pretty advanced level and understanding of grammar, but I make lots of careless mistakes. I don't talk as fast as some people, but I can communicate well, really love the language and I would love to show others how to speak it. I have this fear about a student speaking better than I can. Would I make a good teacher?

After all, they have been selling our questions to the sponsors. So we, as authors of our questions, should be getting our share.

(proof of profit: just look at any of you past questions and see who Yahoo sold your question to. Example: if you asked a question about "widgets", then Yahoo sold your question to a company or companies that sold "widgets".)

2nd question: Is anyone in the mood to bring a class action suit against Yahoo to force them pay us?

About Half an hour ago my sister hit the side of my head with a wooden pole really really hard. When she did this, it left a bad cut right next to my eye, and halfway obliterated my glasses. On Monday, I am going to have to wear an eyepatch over my damaged eye, and tape all over my glasses, because my new glasses won't come for over two weeks.
How do I cope with this humiliation??? I cant stay home, because my parents woudn't take "If I go to school on monday, I will die of humiliation!" as an excuse
P.S. My sister didn't even get in trouble at all for what she did. I know that totally sucks.

Its a big galaxy. Almost any scientist, astronomer, or physicist would tell you there is almost no chance that we are alone in the universe. The odds are that the conditions that caused life to begin here could easily have occured somewhere else, especially when you consider that there may be hundreds of billions of planets out there.

But Christians believe that God created the world. he created everything which is observable to humans. So maybe there are other beings that this God created; we just can't see them because they are so far away.

What do you think?

The Seventh-day Adventists are one of the few Christian churches that follow the example of Christ in this sacred act of humility. The church provides a basin with water and a towel for members to wash the feet of fellow members prior to partaking of the bread and the wine(Grape Juice) Christ blood.

Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. This was an act of humilty. The Master of all becomes the Servant to all. He stoops down and acts the part of a servant. He even washed the dirty feet of Judas. He knew that Judas had betrayed him, but he still reached out to his betrayer in a most loving way. Jesus is our example in humilty.

Why do so many of our Christian churches omit the Ordinance of humilty during their Communion Service? The act itself symbolizes cleansing. Cleansing from pride, selfishness, prejudice, immorality and all known and unknown sins.

God's grace is sufficient. The Ordinance of humility is a most beautiful service. Christ is our example in this sacred act

Atheists...what is this imaginary persecution that you guys talk about ? You speak as if the USA is controlled by religion. This country has given you freedom to be whatever you want to be. I live in the so called " Bible-belt " right now and not one person has EVER tried to " cram Jesus down my throat "...not once. I look very jewish and if anyone would be a target for prosylitizing it would be me. Do you think you may be dramatising this Christian persecution thing at least a little bit ?

Sigh...will somebody just write the cable companies to get them to create the (W)hite (E)nter(T)anment channel so that the Caucasians on this site will stop complaining? They could put on shows and videos which depict their race in the best possible and most inspiring light...just like BET! =D

Because they just gave a name 'GOD' and if it didn't exist it wouldn't have a name.So if you don't believe in God you should not have anything to say about GOD right. That goes along with anything

Because the Old Testaments says to execute homosexuals so I assume that it was a righteous thing to do at some point in time. I would like to hear more bible-believing Christian say, "Executing homosexuals was the righteous thing to do at some point in time."

Would you run, or try to defend against the gunman?
With all the workplace and school shootings lately, I think about this a lot.
It's pretty bad when you can't feel like you are safe anywhere.
I think I would try to stop the shooter, especially if there are kids around. I would rather go down than to see some innocent child get shot....

I have to play a game of chess with the Angel of Death next week. If I win, I live. If I lose, she gets my soul. I'm not very good at chess, so I'm planning to cheat.

Does anybody know of a good way to cheat Death?
