Oh Yes. But not the only reason.
Most western criticism of religion focuses on the Abrahamic religions—particularly Christianity, Judaism, and Islam — with titles such as Why I am not a Christian, The God Delusion and The End of Faith representing some popular published books. Not all the criticisms would apply to all religions: criticism regarding the existence of god(s), for example, has very little relevance to some forms of Buddhism.
Critics consider all religious faith essentially irrational.
Many critics claim dogmatic religions are typically morally deficient, elevating to moral status ancient, arbitrary, and ill-informed rules that may have been designed for reasons of hygiene, politics, divisions amount societies or other reasons in a bygone era.
One good example of that would be the Muslim segregation from main stream society in recent days. In west Muslim have segregated them selves because they do not accept the western lifestyle.
Saudi Arabia deny non-Muslims some of the civil rights and voting privileges they grant to Muslims. Iran consigns non-Muslim monotheists to the status of dhimmis, both officially and by custom. There have been reports of imprisonment, harassment, intimidation, and discrimination based on religious beliefs. In fact until March 1, 2004, the official Saudi government website stated that Jews were forbidden from even entering the country. Saudi Arabia in particular is notorious for very stringent religious laws banning the practice of non-Muslim religions, even prescribing imprisonment and the death penalty for attempting to convert Muslims to other religions.
Israel, deny access to Muslims, because Muslims majority of Muslim countries don't accept Israel as Sovereign State.

It's not absurd, Jack. The basis for religion probably started much farther back than a lot of people would consider, but I believe in evolution. To me, it is the fear of what comes (or doesn't) after death. Yes. I have a hard time believing that early man did not understand that he would die. A man, watching his son die, might try to understand why the son is no longer there, although the body still is. Where did he go? This needs explanation. Imagine being one of only a few humans in the world, trying to keep your fire going, being hunted by everything, trying to survive the night? I would have come up with an imaginary friend to keep me company, to give hope, and to take me to a better place when my wits have failed to keep me alive much longer; being trapped and needing intervention. Then you come along, scare off my attacker, and I've been given another chance at life. Miracles occured then, too. What nobody knows though, even to this day, is what comes after death, and a "religion" that provides some explanation (not the right word) is a welcome thing. I believe that religion has been refined over the years to fit the needs of those who need to believe in something more than themselves. I must have a purpose; God put me here. What I'm talking about is something much older. Before gods, devils, bibles. Before language, even. Maybe it was then that religion started in the mind, giving us the serenity to face the night.

Devided? or Divided? If you mean Divided then probably so:
The reason black people were used as slaves to white people long ago was because some white people thought that the color of their skin meant that it is the mark of Cain and think about Hitler he made a lot of people hate Jewish people now I don't even see why people in my little brother's catholic elementary school call each other "Stupid Jews".

we seem to be basically tribal and have to belong to a group - so we need to belong, but also to exclude -- this plays right into the hands of the Organised Religions. However, they are not the sole cause of divisions - so many other things divide society - politics. sport, economics, age, ethnic origins, fashion, etc in fact anything we can use as an excuse. That said, l think religion the most powerful divider and has been the major cause of misery throughout history.

It's power hungry control freaks who interpret religion in order to maintain control over the proletariat. They are te problem, not the good books. Greed to plays a part, money is power and there's lots of money in religion, the Catholic church is the richest. My church is the poorest, I can pray in any temple or in a forest, my god is all gods and my religion is all religions. I hurt nobody, but I hope the world joins me in forming a religion that nobody knows about and hopefully never will. I called it "World religion." Keep safe, and may your god go with you. sorry although i don't agree with religion. it is not the main reason it's just one of the many facets of pride, which is the underlying reason. all pride is false! proud to be black, proud to be english or proud to be a woman? as if anyone had any say in it! especially the woman, as science has shown. she has a man to thank for that! everyone is good at one thing and bad at another. whatever your achievements are, they depend to some degree on a natural ability. should anyone be proud of their ability to walk and look down on another born disabled? it's just the same the only difference is the direction and degree!

Religion is one of the reasons, but not the main reason. Race and territories are other factors.

Not at all. We are divided because we are human and our nature is to fight each other. Take a look at big brother on the TV....how many series of that have you ever seen where they all got on well without any conflict......was religion involved there....er not !!!

If everybody followed their religion properly - there would be no trouble in the world.
All religions teach us to love one and other - it's just that some people misinterpret the rules.
