I was raised as a Christian, and I think my religious education was very thorough. I also have done a lot of independent reading as an adult to expand my knowledge, but surprisingly I have met many Christians who do not know what the Council of Nicea was, who don't know about the political and social conditions of the world during the lifetime of Jesus and things I would think any well-informed religious person should know about their faith.

My question to you all is, what do you actually learn about the history of the Church from your religious education? Do you only study scripture? How does church history influence your beliefs?

Please keep this civil. It's a genuine question, not meant to be malicious or attacking.

why is it so many people believe in all this rubbish that some cave man made up and that has been spun out of proportion over thousands of years.
arguing over rubbish "ooooh my gods better than yours, my god will get me in to heaven"
"heaven" what the "hell" is that? heaven, its that couple of seconds just before you empty your load in your girlfriend. o and most of you religious people wouldn't even know what that is like would you.

There is so much evil in the world, so much envy, jealousy, bitterness, and hatred, all radiating like ripples in our pond, called life, creating a muddy shoreline where nothing grows, that smells foul and is unpleasant for any journey.

What then if evil can multiply through the course of cause and effect in this manner might we do to cultivate kindness and smiles?

THINK WHAT YOU MIGHT DO TODAY FOR SOMEONE that might turn the tide and begin to mend the shores of our existence?

What will you do this day?

And for those who didn't like the way I asked above:

What can you do on this day to cultivate happiness, joy and peace?

EX:
1) Pay for a person's bridge toll?
2) Pay for someone's gas that is obviously scraping up change from the floor of their car?
3) Let the person who has been trying to merge into traffic, merge safely and without a scowl on your face?
4) Open a door for someone?
5) Smile, sincerely?
6) Carry groceries
7) Rake your neighbor's leaves-They are from your tree!

I am a Christian, but I don't understand how Christians can say that to be a Christian you must be a republican. Here are a few reasons:
-Peace centered teachings like Jesus' would obviously be against war, but we have Iraq
-If God created the world we should love it and take care of it, but the republicans are obviously not a pro-environment party
-Repbulicans often get elected because they say they will push "morality." But abortion is still legal (for example), and the whole Foley incident happened. So it might be logical to conclude that republicans merely USE morality.
So really this question is possed to Christians who think that you can not be a Christian if you are not a republican. Why do you think that?

The pope and some high ranking clergymen wear a head covering while officiating a church function but other laymen are not so free to wear a head covering of their choice-why? There is a big divide between the liberal wing and the conservative wing in christendon as regards the woman wether she should cover or not- please without bias and with authoritative scriptural explanation may i know what is God's mind irrespective of primitive or civilised concept

I have no religion that I believe in, because I find all beliefs valid.
But what I have seen on this forum is many christians contradicting the words of Jesus. They call people evil, and filled with the devils touch if they do not believe the way they do. I see hateful suggestions, and comprimised judgement. from the christians replys. But from the atheists who have no god to believe in they seem to not judge, and offer you the right without ridicule to believe whatever makes you happy. So please Christians tell me that today will be the day you will love your fellow atheist, because he is a man, and you are too. Tell me from your heart not from some pasted scripture. Tell me, tell them, that you are not above, and hold some exclusive key to heaven. Dont preach or be condescending. Just tell your atheist brother, or the wiccan who lives next door to you that they too deserve heaven. And that in the end man, and god will create one with acceptance and love. I wish you well

There are multiple thousands of Christian denominations. There are many factions of Catholicism. There are Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, and literally hundreds of "religions". There are Athiests. My question is simple - If there is one God, and, depending on your religion, the text you base your religion on tells you specifically the manner in which worship is acceptable, and these definitions vary from religion to religion, who has it right? Does any religion on the planet have the correct manner of worship and conduct to please God?

Feel free to quote religious texts. In context, please.
