Puto and puta can have a lot of meanings in the Mexican culture.
The basic meaning should be "queer" or "fäggot" for "puto" and "bïtch" for "puta".

But that might be misleading. You can also address a friend of yours using the word "puto" and not attempt to offend him. (For that you would need to be close friends). So if you hear this word among friends, you can almost be sure that it is quite harmless. With "puta", though, there's no "soft" side to it, so you can be sure it is intended to be offensive, or at least, to refer to a whore.

In the case you describe, the meaning would depend on the context. If your friend was angry, she was trying to insult him. If not, it MIGHT be harmless (of course, it depends on the kind of relationship both have grown towards each other).

Both words can also be used as adjectives, and in most cases they would be somehow equivalent to "bloody" (like in "that bloody box fell on my head": "esa puta caja me cayó en la cabeza").

Dandelion's answer is completely untrue. "Punto" means "dot" or "point" and "punta" means "tip".

Bi-tch. If someone calls you puta, you should ask yourself, "Is this person asking for a knuckle sandwich?" "Is he/she trying to make me angry?" Don't fall for it.

Prostitute (whore, hooker, etc.) It's an insult to call someone that.
