Why are some people willing to deny scientific evidence just because it contradicts their beliefs?

Nowadays, science is able to explain countless of phenomena that the primitive men could not. Thanks to psychology we know how the mind works, thanks to sociology we gain more understanding of relationships and societies, thanks to astronomy we know the Earth is round, we know about solar systems, galaxies and cumules. Thanks to biology we know about evolution, and how nature works.
Yet, the world is still full of people willing to ignore this facts just because they are insecure of embracing change and progress.
People that choose to believe evolution is a myth, and refuse to see any evidence. "young earth" creationists that cannot adapt their beliefs to reality. People that still believe their actions are "influenced by the devil", when psychology already explains what causes most human "evilness".

So...I finally came out to myself, family, and close friends...I'm not publically gay, but ... I'm getting there. I go to the DSAGA (essentially GLBT club) to meet people but they aren't very social.

I'm particularly lonely right now because I thought I had a boyfriend (yeah he was gay before me...he's the reason why I came out...to be with him). Turns out all he wanted was sex and when I didn't give it to him because I prefered to be in a relationship first (I'm a virgin...never did anything with girls or guys...awaiting my first kiss still) I got dumped.

Now I'd really like to not only make friends but seek out someone to have a relationship with. It's scary because being the your virginal person...there's a lot of creepers out there who really only want sexual relations...

Any advice about what to do now? How to make friends? What events to attend? Anything would be helpful.

Are you concerned about Identity Fraud. Are we redused to tearing up every bit of corrispondence tha comes through our letter box. I know I think twice about thowing away bank statements etc! Crime always keep up with the times, Is the issue all about greed and the Look after No: one syndrom. When we are borbarded with signs of great wealth every day for the few through the media are we being unrealistic to expect the rest of the population that dont have the wealth or advantages of others not to aspire to something better for them and theirs. So are we as a nation being naive to expect that our citazens of all cultures and backgrounds should,nt turn to crimes and take advantage of the new era of technoligy. Surely the anwser is a more equal sociaty. As allways there does,nt seem to be an easy answer. Are we being forced into a way of living that we cant ever trust anyone or anything.

Look around you: at school, organizations, stores, etc.
I don't know how we got this way but...
