My elder neighbours (1930's) use to tell me what the fall spring and summer would be like form the weather on the last days of February and the first of March but I do not remember the order. Has anyone heard of this before?

From two sources, I have slightly different Beaufort scales - the wind speed brackets are virtually the same, but some of the names have changed, (esp. the gales) and Storm is now in a different bracket altogether. Did the difinitions change? If so, when? Is there an 'old' scale and a 'new' scale?

I used to think that Spring began on March 21st.

However, I have just watched the weather on BBC News 24 and the presenter stated that met office statisticians believe that spring starts on 1 March (with summer beginning on 1 June, autumn on 1 September and winter on 1 December).

Apparently the beginning of spring has been brough forward due to global warming.

Can this be right?

Since we have been having spring like weather lately and there is a storm tonight it got me wondering. Why do you not have thunder and lightening during storms in the winter? Does heat have anything to do with it?

Grey skies I can understand, but why do some clouds have a clearly defined edge. On an aeroplane, when you go through certain clouds it is unnerving to find yourself swamped by cloud one second, and bathe in direct sunlight the next, and back again as you fly through bunches of clouds.

Why do some clouds not appear to dissipate? After all, when your kettle boils you do not see mini clouds keeping their shape, floating around your kitchen as the steam comes out.

Yet some clouds all blurr and merge together to form a generally grey sky - that's what I would expect.
